You Can Cuddle With the Cutest Member of the Mighty Nein

Critical Role is Geek & Sundry’s live Dungeons & Dragons show featuring Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer and his troupe of fellow voice actors. Catch them every Thursday night at 7:00 PM PT on the Geek & Sundry Twitch channel and on Alpha.

Ashlee Blackburn, a freelance artist, just recently started watching Critical Role last fall at the behest of some good friends. It didn’t take long for Ash to become a fan and fan artist, and she turned her talents into a plush doll that captured the hearts of Critters everywhere.

Minor spoilers for Critical Role follow.

Kiri, a young Kenku, crosses paths with the Mighty Nein in a dangerous swamp, where they save her from a horrible fate. The adventurers with hearts of gold protect Kiri and ultimately guide her to safety. You might have recently spotted Ash’s extraordinary Kiri doll that now has a home on the Talks Machina set—and with a little luck you can get one of your very own.

Ash crafts Kiri by hand, and her original design and creation took over 50 hours.

“I began by sketching up some designs, and once I had one I liked I drew a profile shot to scale so I could figure out my pattern,” Ash tells Geek & Sundry. “Her head was a little tricky, as I wanted to give her puffy cheeks. I ended up making a small clay model that I covered in masking tape to make a pattern on top of.

“After that it was a matter of trial and error, which for her wasn’t too bad. I think I only had to make two or three prototypes until she was ready to be made in full. The excitement helped push me to do things a lot quicker than I normally do.”

Ash has since perfected the process, taking only 10-15 hours to hand-make each Kiri, and offers the doll to lucky Critters who are shopping for the perfect plush.

“I have never had this kind of reaction to a plush before and had no idea what was going on!” recalls Ash about the original reaction to the soft Kiri. “It was touching to see so many people not only appreciate my work, but share it like they did. The number of ‘shut up and take my money’ comments definitely encouraged me to make more and sell them.”

Making so many plush is obviously a labor of love for the quickly beloved Kenku character. Ash credits the Mighty Nein’s initial reactions to the character as the inspiration to craft a Kiri to love and keep safe.

“That instant need to protect her and find her a home made me feel similarly,” she says. “I wanted to look out for this little bird creature and her 7 hit points. She also has the best catchphrases, and sure knows how to tug on your heartstrings. All that, and the amazing fan art, really inspired me to make a physical version of how I pictured her in my head.”

Keep an eye on Ash’s Twitter to find out when more plush are available if you’ve been wishing for a Kiri to call your own!
