Welcome To The Post-Apocalypse: A Open Letter From The Martyrs of The New World

So it finally happened: the end of the world as we know it. The robots and extra-terrestrials joined forces and set loose a virus that infected the population all whilst temperatures rose to unbearable levels at an alarming rate. But some how, you managed to pull through. You’re one of the soul survivors in a post-apocalyptic world.

You may be asking yourself, what did I do to deserve this. And what will I do? How will I cope under the weight of survivor’s guilt? And just how will I adjust to the new world if and when I find others?

Luckily, you remember the films, television programs, books, and games you used to watch and read and play in the world that was. You draw upon the wisdom of your favorite characters who made it through the apocalypse when all hope seemed lost.

You think about it long and hard, and all of the sudden the characters begin to materialize in front of you. You chalk it up to a hallucination in your dehydrated state, but for the moment it’s as if they’re talking to you directly. And so you listen, because there’s actually nothing left for you to loose.

Neo – The Matrix

Everything is not as it appears. The world as you’ve known it is a complete and utter lie. Basically, you’ve been a human battery your entire life. But it’s okay, because once you’re unplugged the world is at your fingertips. You can be taught skills you never dreamed of. And more importantly, you can save others from their fate. Don’t worry, I didn’t know what I was doing either. But once Morpheus offered me the red pill and showed me the way… whoa.

Rick Grimes – The Walking Dead

The apocalypse will take a lot from you, your family, your friends, and will damn well make you question your will to live. But don’t give up hope. Because if you keep searching and keep fighting you’ll find other survivors and they’ll become your family. The world has changed, but it’s not over yet. Not if I have any say in the matter.

The Guide – The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

So Earth was destroyed to create a hyper-space bypass, sorry about that. I know it must be hard for you. But don’t panic! I mean, look on the bright side, think of all of the fantastic new places you can explore through out the galaxy! Just stick a babel fish in your ear and get to it! Think of it as a really long vacation. And, oh, don’t forget to bring a towel.

Ellie – The Last Of Us

Sometimes you’re given a gift. Or at least you’re told you are given a gift. Something you didn’t ask for, like immunity from the disease that killed your friends and everyone else around you and turned them into monsters. It’s more than you bargained for. More than you think you deserve. It takes courage to take on that sort of responsibility. And though it may feel like you didn’t have a choice in the matter, sometimes it’s worth it, because you just might see something beautiful, or find another lost soul who needs you just as much as you need them.

After your new mentors enlighten you with their advice, they disappear into the ether, as easy as they came. And all at once you are alone again, but not really. You’re left with a new found vigor – and dare I say hope – to face the new world of the post-apocalypse.
