WATCH: How to Play – Mistborn: House War

Join host Becca Scott as she breaks out some of the best boardgames the industry has to offer, with new guests each week!

This week, Becca’s teaching us all how to play Mistborn: House War by Crafty Games.  If you’re a fan of Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn novel series, you’ll love this game. As lead developer Alex Flagg put it, “The game is set during the events of the first Mistborn novel, but instead of playing the good guys, the players command the noble Houses who have to deal with those good guys as problems (in and amongst the many other challenges of running a dystopian empire). This makes playing House War is almost like writing your own side-quel to the first book, where you control the outcome of events – will the Final Empire stand or fall, and who will be on top at the end of it all? ”

Even if you’re unfamiliar with it, the game offers some really compelling mechanics as it’s an asymmetrical, semi-cooperative resource management game. Alex describes it as a frenemies game: “Unlike a lot of economic games, House War is really about negotiation, haggling and manipulation – you win not based on what you have, but how well you cajole, threaten, ally with and betray others to achieve victory. And unlike a lot of negotiation games, House War gives you a lot of tools to leverage strategically and cut deals.”

If you want more insight on how lead developer Alex Flagg and designer Kevin Wilson translated the bestselling novel series to the tabletop, check out this article.
