WATCH: How to Play – Coup by Indie Boards and Cards

Join Game the Game host Becca Scott as she shows us how to play awesome tabletop games here on Geek & Sundry!

Today, Becca’s teaching us to play the modern classic Coup by Indie Boards and Cards. In the not so distant future, you are a powerful head of a family in Italy.  It’s up to you to manipulate and bribe the weak government into giving you more power while exiling the other families.

To do this, you must exert your influence, represented by facedown down cards in front of you. As you spend them, they turn face up and you lose that influence. If you spend all of your influence, you go into exile.

Each of the different cards has a different ability to aid or block you. This is where things get tricky. Someone wants to grab two coins on their turn, do you play the Duke to stop them and gain three coins yourself or do you hold onto the influence and wait to block them later in the game. But you don’t really have to have the character in front of you to use the ability. All you have to do is say you have it and then you wait. Do they challenge you and possibly lose one of their influence cards as well?  Or do they let it slide? How well can you read your friends?

If they challenge you and you don’t have the card, you have to flip one of your cards and lose the influence. Winning the challenge means that you show your card and shuffle it into the deck and draw a new one, adding another layer of difficulty to the game.

Once you have enough coins in front of you, it’s time to call a coup and knock out one of your opponent’s influence unchallenged. It takes seven coins to do this, so watch your back because the second you get near it, you know they are gunning for you.

Are you ready to bluff your way into being the last family standing? Can you make an offer the government can’t refuse? Watch Becca’s How to Play and get ready to call a Coup!
