WATCH: Game The Game – Mistborn: House War

Every week,  Becca Scott breaks out some of the best boardgames the industry has to offer to play with guests each week on our boardgame show, Game The Game.

This week, Becca’s playing Mistborn: House War by Crafty Games with Maggie Hogan, Alex Zvdorak, Kyle Wallen, and Crafty Games co-owner, Patrick Kapera.

If you’re a fan of the novel Mistborn (and the series it spawned), you’ll love this game. As the game’s lead developer Alex Flagg put it, “The game is set during the events of the first Mistborn novel, but instead of playing the good guys, the players command the noble Houses who have to deal with those good guys as problems (in and amongst the many other challenges of running a dystopian empire). This makes playing House War is almost like writing your own side-quel to the first book, where you control the outcome of events – will the Final Empire stand or fall, and who will be on top at the end of it all? ”

Even if you’re unfamiliar with it, the game offers some really compelling mechanics as it’s an asymmetrical, semi-cooperative resource management game. Alex describes it as a frenemies game: “Unlike a lot of economic games, House War is really about negotiation, haggling, and manipulation – you win not based on what you have, but how well you cajole, threaten, ally with and betray others to achieve victory. And unlike a lot of negotiation games, House War gives you a lot of tools to leverage strategically and cut deals.”

Want to get your hands on the game? Pick it up at mistbornhousewar.com and at reputable game retailers near you. You can also stay up-to-date with what Crafty Games is up to by signing up for their email newsletter or following them on Facebook and Twitter.
