WATCH: Game The Game – Deception: Murder in Hong Kong (Playthrough)

Each week, Game the Game host Becca Scott is joined by amazing guests to showcase amazing tabletop games here on Geek & Sundry.

This week, Becca’s joined by Johnny Recher, Pisha Warden, Erik Beck, Paula Deming, and Melanie Bowman as they take on murderers in Deception: Murder in Hong Kong!

At the start of the game, everyone is given a role card. The Forensic Scientist reveals who they are and deals four key evidence and four weapon cards to all the other players. Everyone puts their heads down except the Murderer and the Forensic Scientist. The Murderer points to one of their evidence and weapons. And now the game begins because they want to pick something that could be confused with a card in front of another player.

Once they’ve seen the cards chosen, the Forensic Scientist lays out six tiles (Cause of Death, Location, and four others). Based on the cards picked, they place markers on the tiles to give clues to the Investigators. Each person then gets 30 seconds to talk out what they make of the clues. If no one accuses anyone else, the Forensic Scientist draws a new tile and replaces one already on the board to give a fresh clue to the players.

When they’re ready to accuse another person, players spend their Accusation Token (which is a tiny police badge) and say what weapon and evidence are the correct ones. Get it right, and all the Investigators win, but both cards named need to be correct. If one is wrong, the Forensic Scientist must say no and take your badge. That player is now relegated to trying to persuade the other players’ decisions for the rest of the game. There are no half measures in crime investigation. If no one gets it right, the Murderer goes free.

To add a twist to the game, there are two other roles: Accomplice and Witness. The Accomplice is there to help muddy the waters. They know exactly who did it and with what, but need to divert the group’s attention from the Murderer. The Witness knows who the Murderer is, but not what the weapon or evidence is. They need to stay in the game to point their finger and dime out the Murderer.

Find out who comes out on top by watching this week’s episode!
