Vox Machina Makes Their Mark With These Tattoos Inspired by Critical Role

Critical Role is Geek & Sundry’s live Dungeons & Dragons show, featuring Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer and his troupe of fellow voice actors. Catch them every Thursday night at 7:00 PM PT on the Geek & Sundry Twitch channel and on Alpha.

As anyone who is a fan of Critical Role will tell you, the show goes well beyond Thursday nights. The stories and characters stick with viewers long after the stream is over for the night. In fact, for some Critters, Critical Role goes with them everywhere they do, thanks to gorgeous, intricate tattoos inspired by Vox Machina and their adventures.

Ju Scochi, who has the tattoo shown above, was inspired by several aspects of the show when putting together the perfect design with the help of her tattoo artist. She credits Critical Role for getting her out of a dark place in her life. “It was like a warm light from the inside, and day by day, it spread its warmth all over my body,” she says.

“Keyleth and Vex’ahlia are strong women who do not let anyone tell them they can’t do something. So they are the ‘base’ of the design,” says Ju. “I wanted to have a little piece of everyone in the art.”

The other symbols are inspired by other members of Vox Machina, such as Vax represented by the dark feather, a white feather for Pike, a music note for Scanlan, a jewel for Taryon, the de Rolo crest for Percy, and an axe for Grog. And all of the symbols are connected with string.

“And then, there is the book,” says Ju. “It is in the outer part of my arm, not inwards. That’s because, like Matt’s fantasy world, I want my work to be a part of other people’s life too. To have as much impact as Critical Role has in many people.”

Miles M. has an homage to everyone's favorite Champion of the Raven Queen, created by artist Julie Ann.

Miles M. found inspiration in the story of Vax’ildan that resonated with his own life. “Over the past few years Vax and Liam have honestly been major role models for me,” he says. “I’m constantly amazed at how open-hearted Liam is, and Vax by proxy. His connections with others are always so genuine, and I hope I can be as open and loving as Vax, no matter what fate throws at me.

“Vax also helped me become more comfortable in my bisexuality. And I chose that specific design because it looked bad-ass, haha!”

Even if Vox Machina’s adventures have concluded, these Critters will always have them on their skin—and in their hearts. “Vox Machina saved me,” Ju says. “For real. I’m not sure I would be here today if it wasn’t for them.”
