UPDATE: Detroit’s Fyre Fest LARP Barred From Belle Isle Venue

Yesterday we brought you a story about how someone is planning a Fyre Fest LARP (live action roleplaying) event in Detroit, complete with “booked” musical artists who won’t show up and character sheets for attendees. One snag in the event, however, has been reported by the Detroit Metro Times: the Fyre Fest LARP has been barred from the original location, Detroit’s Belle Isle.

As reported, “The (Department of Natural Resources) just straight up told me that if I applied for a permit they would deny it,” Michelle Birawer, the LARP’s organizer, told Metro Times. Michigan State’s Department of Natural Resources administrates Belle Isle as it is considered a state park.

A DNR spokesperson responded to the Metro Times: “She went ahead and put a date and time on Facebook and ran with it with no approvals from DNR staff.”

In response, Birawer posted a change to the location on the Fyre Fest LARP Facebook event: Hamtramck, with a comment: “The Department of Natural Resources does not want us. So we are going to bring the party to the party Island of Hamtramck instead!” Here’s a map that shows Belle Isle and Hamtramck, for reference:

Hamtramck

It’s landlocked: calling Hamtramck and its billing as an “island” is about as appropriate as calling Great Exuma a private island. Seems that the LARP organizers are as committed to the lore and canon of the dystopian music festival as anyone else.
