This Charity Fundraiser Will Have You Playing Smash Up for a Great Cause

Smash Up‘s Zombie Lord returns this weekend with a mission that’s quite the opposite of the sort of nefarious schemes we might expect from him. He’ll be participating in GameBlast17, one of the United Kingdom’s biggest gaming marathons–raising money for the Special Effect charity. Nomad Games is partnering with Twitch, among other notable gaming outfits, with the goal of raising £100,000 (roughly $125,000) in just 24 hours.

Similar to Able Gamers, the UK-based Special Effect is a charity with a mission to make gaming more accessible to the disabled. Their efforts have run from customizing controllers for those with special needs to employing new technologies from the StarGaze project, which actually allow players to control games with just their eyes. As you’ll see in the outfit’s promo clip below, regaining the ability to play with friends–a simple privilege too easily taken for granted–can tremendously brighten patients’ worlds.

As Special Effect’s Communications Officer Mark Saville puts it…

“Playing for 24 hours is a big challenge, but we’re asking people to attempt it to help the thousands of people who, because of a disability, can only sit and watch other people have all the fun with family and friends.”

Fans are invited to watch the gaming gauntlet unfold live on Nomad’s Twitch and YouTube channels, and encouraged to chip into the cause through a dedicated fundraising link. An entry-level donation fetches a Steam Key for the Shaman character in the digital edition of Talisman. Nomad is also putting up a hefty Steam key bundle (including the Talisman Gold pack, Smash Up starter pack, Talisman: The Horus Heresy, and a bevy of other goodies) which will be awarded to a random donor after the festivities.

Wait–where will the Zombie Lord be throughout all this, though? Why, he’ll be live-streaming some Smash Up, of course. And YouTube’s Cybernova will be challenging teams at Talisman, too.

Will you be catching up Special Effect and the main Zombie for this marathon? Raise your voice in the talkback.
