The Wednesday Club’s Horror Comic Pick: LOCKE & KEY

The Wednesday Club is Geek & Sundry’s weekly talk show chatting about all things comics. On this week’s episode, hosts Taliesin Jaffe and Amy Dallen were joined by Trisha Hershberger to talk about her favorite comic series of all time, the disturbingly good IDW series Locke & Key.

While there was only one pick this week— the nightmare-inducing Locke & Key by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez—The Wednesday Club had plenty to say about the horror series. This is a book that should never be spoiled, declared Trish, so the hosts tried to keep the story revelations to a minimum. Continue reading – if you dare!

Minor spoilers for Locke & Key follow.

Locke & Key

The discussion started with a warning that the content is graphic and horrific.

“If murder sets you off,” Trish warned, “if child death sets you off… Basically, if you would read a Stephen King novel, anything in that that would bug you, same set of trigger warnings I would say.”

The six-volume series is written by Joe Hill, the pen name of Joseph King, son of horror master Stephen King.

“Joe Hill makes an incredible story here,” Trish said, “full of intrigue, and drama, and suspense. I think one of the best things about this series is how much you actually feel for the characters.”

“Well-written kids,” agreed Taliesin.

“It’s a horror-fantasy coming-of-age,” described Amy. “The construction on this book, the storytelling in this book, the love that you have for the characters, it’s just incredible. It’s so good, I’m so glad I’m currently reading it.”

Locke & Key is the story of a family that returns to the father’s childhood estate in Lovecraft, Massachusetts, where they “battle both physical and inner demons,” Trish said. The three kids lead the story, fighting those monsters with the help of keys with strange and wondrous powers that affect both the house and the kids themselves.

If you have a long trip or daily commute ahead of you and you’re interested in this title, you can take advantage of an audio production of the series thanks to Audible. It’s 13 hours of the adapted comic book story, fully dramatized, with a talented cast including Haley Joel Osment, Tatiana Maslany, and Kate Mulgrew.

“It’s very well done,” Trish said, “although there’s a lot of moments where it’s like, weird body meat sounds and screaming.”
