The Wednesday Club’s Comic Picks: Wading Into Waid

The Wednesday Club is Geek & Sundry’s weekly talk show chatting about all things comics. This week, hosts Matt Key, Taliesin Jaffe, and Amy Dallen were joined by Brian Compton to talk about Mark Waid and his staggering body of work.

Mark Waid has been a part of the comic book industry for over 30 years, and has written groundbreaking books like Kingdom Come and 52 (DC Comics), created characters like Bart Allen and Savitar (The Flash) and Onslaught (Marvel), and authored creator-owned titles like Irredeemable and Insufferable.

“To me, Mark Waid is one of the greatest writers in the medium,” said Brian. “He’s the one who really defined to Wally West is. He’s the one who wrote Kingdom Come. He’s the one who reinvigorated Captain America.”

“He thinks in comics,” Amy said.

“One of the things he does really well,” Taliesin said, “is he writes teenagers really well.” (Be sure to check out his runs on Archie and Legion of Super-Heroes!)

Take a look at the gallery below for specific recommendations from the episode.

The hosts also chatted about JLA: The Tower of Babel, Black Widow, Daredevil, Champions, The Flash, the daunting schedule of the weekly 52 series in 2006, and Potter’s Field.
