The Wednesday Club’s Comic Picks: The Truth of Chimichangas

The Wednesday Club is Geek & Sundry’s weekly talk show chatting about all things comics. This week, hosts Matt Key, Taliesin Jaffe, and Amy Dallen were joined by Coy Jandreau to chat about the unforgettable Merc With a Mouth, Deadpool.

Deadpool is reaching almost staggering heights of popularity thanks to Ryan Reynolds’ irreverent films, but his dedicated fanbase extends all the way back to the 1990s. Wade Wilson first appeared in 1991’s New Mutants #98—created by Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld—but the hosts of this week’s episode say he didn’t find his (strangely lovable) voice until years later.

Originally created as a tongue-in-cheek homage to DC Comics’ Deathstroke (although Liefeld saw him more as a Spider-Man spoof), AKA Slade Wilson, Deadpool began his hero career after taking part in the same series of experiments that created both Captain America and Wolverine.

“He’s a man who’s barely alive, but his healing factor won’t let him die,” said Coy.

Deadpool has an incredible healing factor that makes him practically immortal, formidable fighting skills, and an unparalleled ability to break the fourth wall and talk directly to the readers and even the comic book creators.

Take a look at the gallery below for specific recommendations from this episode.

Matt, Coy, Amy, and Taliesin also talked about Deadpool books like Deadpool #11 (1997), The Circle Chase, Deadpool Annual #1, Cable & Deadpool, Deadpool Team-Up, the surprisingly emotional Deadpool #20 (2016), Gwenpool, and the choose-your-own-adventure You Are Deadpool.
