The Wednesday Club’s Comic Picks: Saga (With Teri Hatcher)

The Wednesday Club is Geek & Sundry’s weekly talk show chatting about all things comics. This week, hosts Amy Dallen, Matt Key, and Taliesin Jaffe were joined by Teri Hatcher to talk about life, eating well, cooking, and of course, reading comic books.

You might know Teri as Lois Lane from the 1990s television series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman or in the long-running Desperate Housewives. She might be Lois Lane and Mon-El’s mother on Supergirl, but Teri is a relatively new fan of comics. She’s found a friendly neighborhood comic book store where they recommend compelling reads that she’s fallen in love with.

Teri joined Amy, Matt, and Taliesin to talk about her new favorite, Image Comics’ Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples.

While there is only one series that’s a comic pick this week, the hosts and Teri had plenty to say about it.

saga

Saga combines science fiction and fantasy in a story of two soldiers from opposite sides of a galactic war who fall in love and start a family.

“The whole story is told from the future perspective of their daughter who is born in the first issue,” Taliesin said.

As you can hear in the clip above, while the premise is fantastical, it touches on themes and ideas that apply to the real world.

“[Saga] is way futuristic,” Teri described, “but also representative of racial issues and tensions, and war, but then parenting… The first cover says that nothing is off limits.”

“It’s not afraid to Go There,” Matt agreed. “… There’s no shortage of incredible ideas all-around.”

Teri also revealed that she enjoyed Valiant Entertainment’s Faith and Paper Girls, also from Image Comics.

Eat Well While You Read Good Books

Teri brought along the ingredients for a healthy snack for The Wednesday Club hosts and taught Amy, Matt, and Taliesin how to put it together.

“With reading comics or playing video games, that can be a place where you get sucked into eating junk,” said Teri. “What I like about this is that there’s a crunch factor to it and it’s easy to [eat].”
