The Wednesday Club’s Comic Picks: Rumic World

The Wednesday Club is Geek & Sundry’s weekly talk show chatting about all things comics. This week, hosts Matt Key, Taliesin Jaffe, and Amy Dallen chatted happily about the works of Japanese manga writer and artist Rumiko Takahashi.

If you’re a fan of Japanese anime and manga from the 1980s, chances are you’re already well familiar with the prolific work of Rumiko Takahashi. With titles like Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma 1/2, and Inuyasha, Takahashi’s works are already considered classics and are often remembered fondly by fans.

Takahashi is a master at blending comedy, romance, and action. With books that defined early “harem” manga, to a story about a boy who turns into a girl when he’s doused with cold water, to a story about a nun who falls in love with boxing (and a certain boxer), Rumiko Takahashi’s works are unique, heartwarming, and absolutely unforgettable.

“She’s one of those creators who does everything, can do everything, and has done everything,” Taliesin said. “There’s something for everybody. She has written so much.”

“She is an exceptional artist, and she is an exceptional writer,” said Amy. “She can build a compelling supporting cast, she can land a gag like no one who has ever lived.”

Taliesin also quickly mentioned the horror titles by Takahashi that he enjoyed, like Mermaid Saga and The Laughing Target.
