The Wednesday Club’s Comic Picks: Hellblazer

The Wednesday Club is Geek & Sundry’s weekly talk show chatting about all things comics. This week, hosts Matt Key, Taliesin Jaffe, and Amy Dallen were joined by Dani Carr to talk about the love of her life enchanting John Constantine.

John Constantine is the chain-smoking, magic-using antihero starring in Hellblazer from Vertigo and DC Comics. He’s the DC Universe’s go-to guy for everything occult, demonic, and just plain weird, and he made his first appearance in Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing. Thanks to his recent NBC television series and addition to the roster in The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow, played by Matt Ryan, John Constantine as a character is finally getting the attention he deserves.

The hosts of The Wednesday Club are fans of Constantine, especially Taliesin, who once dressed up as the surly sorcerer at Burning Man.

Guest Dani Carr might be relatively new to the character, but she’s become passionate and knowledgeable about Constantine in a short time. While the Hellblazer books that he stars in can seem confusing to new readers, Dani has simple advice for getting started.

“The best way to start reading Constantine is to start at the beginning,” she said. “Start with Hellblazer Vol. 1: Original Sins… They do a really good job of immediately dropping you in and saying, this is his world, this is his life.”

“You get the sense immediately that he has a whole life going on,” Amy said of the character’s appearance in Sandman. “That it’s just being intersected by this [story]. No matter where you start with Hellblazer, to a certain extent, it will always feel true, he has a whole life going on, and a whole network of people around him.”

Dani and The Wednesday Club hosts also chatted briefly about books like Hellblazer #11, Hellblazer #5, Constantine: The Hellblazer, and Justice League Dark (New 52).
