The Wednesday Club’s Comic Picks: Headfirst Into the Spider-Verse

The Wednesday Club is Geek & Sundry’s weekly talk show chatting about all things comics. On this week’s episode, hosts Matt KeyTaliesin Jaffe, and Amy Dallen were joined by Markeia McCarty and Coy Jandreau to talk about the 2015 mega-event Spider-Verse, starring almost all of the Spider-Men across the Marvel universe(s), and how it connects to the upcoming animated Into the Spider-Verse film.

“These are comic book characters that are instantly recognizable and identifiable,” said Taliesin, “despite the fact that a lot of people who can identify them haven’t necessarily ever read a comic book before. There are a lot of kids all over the world who know what Spider-Man looks like–even before there were movies–but had never read any Spider-Man.”

Most kids recognize the character from action figures and toys, Taliesin continued, and constant iterations on the iconic Spider-Man design for both toys and comics often led to costume changes and ultimately new characters in the Marvel universe. (Pun intended and we’re not sorry.)

The upcoming animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is bringing many of those characters together for the first time on the screen, and The Wednesday Club is here to explain who they are and where they come from.

They talked about characters Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Spider-Man (Miles Morales), Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir, SP//dr (Peni Parker), Spider-Ham, Scarlet Spider (Ben Reilly), Silk (Cindy Moon), Kaine Parker, Spider-Monkeyスパイダーマン (Supaidaman, the Spider-Man with his own Japanese TV series), The Spider-Man (Aaron Aikman), the Spectacular Spider-Ma’am (May Reilly-Parker)Spider-Man 2099 (Miguel O’Hara), Spider-Punk, Spiders Man, Cosmic Spider-ManSpider-Man (Pavitr Prabhakar), Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew), Araña (Anya Corazon), and Spider-Girl (Mayday Parker). (Whew!)

All of these characters were originally brought together for the massive Spider-Verse event in 2015, and we’ll see them again in Into the Spider-Verse.
