The Wednesday Club is Geek & Sundry’s weekly talk show chatting about all things comics. This week, hosts Matt Key, Taliesin Jaffe, and Amy Dallen were joined by Nerdist’s Michelle Buchman to talk about bandes dessinées européennes, or European comics.
European comics aren’t the action-packed superhero books from the Big Two that you’re probably used to. The comics are printed on larger paper, as they’re typically published in magazines and then later collected, and topics typically consist of science fiction and politics.
“European comics, for the most part, are kind of bleak,” said Michelle. “They’re grounded in a darkness. They carry some weight to them, they carry a message.”
Take a look at the gallery below for specific recommendations from this episode.
This week’s hosts also chatted briefly about other European comics like Asterix, Tintin, Corto Maltese: Under the Sign of Capricorn, The Nikopol Trilogy, Aldebaran, The World of Edena, and Sky Doll.
