The Wednesday Club’s Comic Picks: East to West

The Wednesday Club is Geek & Sundry’s weekly talk show chatting about all things comics. This week, hosts Amy Dallen and Taliesin Jaffe were joined by Erika Ishii to talk about Japan’s influence on North American comics.

There’s no question that American pop culture has had an influence on Japanese pop culture, and vice versa. “Pop culture means the culture of the now,” said Taliesin. “That’s what it’s about… It’s a great way of learning about who we are right now, and that’s really important.”

The two cultures have mixed and mingled in media and pop culture in recent years. “It’s an incredible ouroboros of creativity,” said Erika.

Comics, video games, and movies can all feature some familiar elements, whether it’s larger-than-life superheroes or giant kaiju monsters. This week, The Wednesday Club looked at some comics in particular and how they share influence or inspiration from Japanese manga and anime.

Take a look at the gallery below for specific recommendations from the episode.

Taliesin, Amy, and Erika are all obviously longtime fans of manga, and they mentioned several titles along with the Western comics in the conversation. If you’re looking for a Japanese manga to read, take a look at classics like Astro Boy, Sailor Moon, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and Oh My Goddess.
