The Wednesday Club’s Comic Picks: A Wednesday Far, Far Away

The Wednesday Club is Geek & Sundry’s weekly talk show chatting about all things comics. This week, hosts Matt Key, Taliesin Jaffe, and Amy Dallen were joined by Catrina Dennis, a Geek & Sundry alum and current assistant producer of the Looking For Leia documentary series.

Star Wars is a cultural phenomenon that went far beyond the movie screen a long time ago. The films themselves are an important part of just about everyone’s childhood, but for Geek & Sundry’s Taliesin Jaffe and Erika Ishii, it’s a little closer to home than most.

The expansion of Star Wars into comic books wasn’t as simple a decision as you might think, said The Wednesday Club hosts. Stan Lee famously expressed concerns with adapting a movie that no one had seen yet. But we all know what happened next, and Star Wars is credited with helping Marvel get out of a very financially rough period in the company’s history.

Star Wars is the reason I love comics,” said Catrina. “It was the first introduction I had to comic book reading.”

The license for Star Wars comics bounced around from Marvel to small publishers to Dark Horse Comics, returning to Marvel when Disney acquired Lucasfilm.

Matt, Amy, Taliesin, and Catrina also chatted happily about Star Wars comics like the original Marvel series, Star Wars Legacy, the current Marvel series, Vader Down, Tag and Bink, Lost Stars, Kanan: The Last Padawan, Poe Dameron, Forces of Destiny, and the various film adaptations.
