The Wednesday Club’s 2019 Movie and TV Picks

The Wednesday Club is Geek & Sundry’s weekly talk show chatting about all things comics. On this episode, hosts Matt KeyTaliesin Jaffe, and Amy Dallen looked forward to the comic book movies of 2019 with the help of guests Coy Jandreau and Markeia McCarty.

“One thing we don’t often do is talk about some of the adaptations that are out there on the film and television side,” Amy said. “We tend to focus on the comic books themselves. But it’s this beautiful, ridiculous landscape where things are getting adapted and leading to inspiration all over.”

The hosts and guests started by fondly remembering how far we’ve come in the world of comic book movies and TV shows, from the made-for-TV movie Generation X to the moment they realized the nerds won popular culture.

Here’s what Matt, Amy, Taliesin, Markeia, and Coy are looking forward to in 2019, and some comic books you can read to prepare (and make the time go just a little faster while we wait).

Deadly Class (Syfy, January 16, 2019)

Deadly Class is an Image Comics series by Rick Remender that also takes place in the 80s. Marcus Lopez is a disaffected teen who happens to be attending the most brutal high school on the planet. He’s a student at Kings Dominion School for the Deadly Arts, where the world’s soon-to-be-the-best assassins are sent to be trained.

The Umbrella Academy (Netflix, February 15, 2019)

Based on the Dark Horse Comics series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba, The Umbrella Academy is coming to Netflix in February. The cast includes Ellen Page and Mary J. Blige. In this dark tale set in the 1980s, 47 children are born on the same day to women who weren’t even pregnant when the day began. Seven of them were adopted by one man, and when he mysteriously dies, the seven reunite as adults to uncover what really happened… and maybe save the world.

“It’s gonna be great, and the trailer captures it,” said Coy.

Captain Marvel (Marvel Studios, March 8, 2019)

Ms. Marvel was revamped and reborn as Captain Marvel when Kelly Sue DeConnick and David Lopez launched a brand new series in 2014. Carol Danvers will headline the first Marvel movie with a woman as the title character, which is helping the hype for the film go cosmic.

Brie Larson stars as Captain Marvel, and Jude Law is in the film in an unknown role (although Coy has some theories because Law has Resting Traitor Face). Amy may be anticipating this film the most of all.

Hellboy (Lionsgate, April 12, 2019)

David Harbour pulls no punches as Hellboy this spring in the new Dark Horse Comics film adaptation.

Brutal yet comedic, the first trailer seems a little campy to Markeia, possibly matching the aesthetic of Thor: Ragnarok. “Mignola has been working behind the scenes with [the director]… They’ve talked a lot about it being darker and more horror,” Amy said. “The first trailer surprised me and probably everybody by being sort of an action comedy vibe.”

Dark Phoenix (Fox, June 7, 2019)

Based on of the most beloved X-Men comic storylines of all time, the Dark Phoenix Saga, the film version is currently planned as a swan song for the Fox X-Men. However, not much is known about this 2019 movie beyond the trailer, nor the New Mutants movie also in development.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (Marvel Studios, July 5, 2019)

While not much is known about the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, Coy has some theories. The film stars Jake Gyllenhall as Mysterio, and Coy foresees a brother dynamic between him and Peter Parker. “Mysterio is a great character if they use him really well,” Matt said.

Avengers: Endgame (Marvel Studios, April 26, 2019)

‘Nuff said.

Matt, Amy, Taliesin, Coy, and Markeia are also looking forward to new episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Titans, Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Black Lightning, The Punisher, Young Justice, Avengers Assemble, Teen Titans GO!, The Chilling Adventures of SabrinaLegion, Cloak and Dagger, and Marvel’s Runaways.

They also had a shoutout for the currently running West Coast Avengers comic book series by Kelly Thompson, Stefano Caselli, and Daniele de Nicuolo. “If you read one book this Christmas, make it West Coast Avengers!” Taliesin said.
