The Shocking Events of Sagas of Sundry: Dread Ep. 4

Death is always a loss, but sacrifice gives it meaning. The sacrifice of a human life to save others was the fate of our five – now four – heroes this week on Sagas of Sundry: Dread!

When last we left them, Raina, Darby, Kayden, Sat and Tanner were fleeing a ravening horde of undead. Seeing a distant light, they rapidly run for it.

Tanner decides to use the bow and arrow they found to hold off the undead, giving his friends time to escape out the hole and into the daylight beyond.

But Tanner is hopelessly outnumbered. He fires arrow after arrow into the foul fiends, but to no avail. His friends turn from outside to see him raise his bow a final time, fire it into the mass of ravening corpses, and sink among them like a stone in the surf.

Suddenly, there is a cave-in, insuring that Raina, Kayden, Sat, and Darby are safe, and that there is no hope for Tanner.

Tanner Pull

Outside, Darby says, “I wanted to be the one who died. My ritual didn’t work. None of this is real.”

The rest of our heroes grieve and bewail the death of Tanner, some regretting thoughts and feelings left unsaid, others focusing on more practical matters.

Satine says, “We have to get back in the cave. We have to stop them from eating Tanner’s body!”

Kayden says, “There’s no way I’m going back in there to save chunks of Tanner.”

Agreeing that Tanner’s sacrifice would be meaningless if they risked their lives trying to acquire his body from the hungry dead, the friends remain outside.

Darby finds a goat’s skull mounted on a stick. Upon seeing it, she feels better, as though a weight has been lifted off her shoulders. Perhaps her attempts at communication with the goat man were not for naught.

She passes it to Kayden who, disgusted at the sudden happiness of Darby after the death of Tanner, scribbles, “Fuck You” on the skull and then spits on it.

Darby says, “I don’t see how that helped.”Reaction

And Kayden replies, “Well, I feel better.”

As the survivors take stock of themselves and their year, Kayden confesses that he got into art school, but got kicked out, and Raina shares that she also almost got expelled from art school.

But Darby remains fixated on the goat man, and the fate of Tanner’s body. The skull she found of the goat seems to exert an almost supernatural hold on her imagination. She tells the other survivors that she is going to try to summon the goat man. With his help, they can go back into the cave, fend off the undead, and get Tanner’s body back.

Despite misgivings, the others allow her to cast her spell, her chanted words ringing the empty air, swelling with power and strength as she repeats the incantation again and again and again and again.

At last, as though congealed from the thinness of space itself, a shadowy figure resolves behind her. It towers above her, over six feet tall, with thick strong arms and legs, but a face that occupies all her attention. It is a long, frowning face, more like that of an animal than a man, and it is framed by a pair of large, goatish, horns.

What does this dark and mysterious figure desire? What will be the fate of our surviving friends? To find out, head over to Alpha to see what happens next time on Sagas of Sundry: Dread!
