The Critical Role Cosplayer and the Amazing Mollymauk Dreamcoat

Critical Role is Geek & Sundry’s live Dungeons & Dragons show, featuring Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer and his troupe of fellow voice actors. Catch them every Thursday night at 7:00 PM PT on the Geek & Sundry Twitch channel and on Alpha.

When we first met Mollymauk Tealeaf as the second Critical Role campaign kicked off, Taliesin Jaffe described his ostentatious outfit, from the glittering jewelry to his dazzling overcoat. That gloriously embellished coat has captured the imagination of cosplayers everywhere. They are undaunted, accepting the challenge of such an elaborate design… even though Taliesin might have been playing a bit of a trick worthy of Jester on them.

One Critter cosplayer, Kassandra Erin (Elycium Cosplay), almost didn’t take on the costume project. “I had taken one look at [Mollymauk’s] character art and went, ‘Mmmm, nope,’ as soon as I saw him,” they recall, “because I knew it would involve embroidery, which is something I had never done before now. But as soon as he swanned in, in the first episode, I started to change my mind.”

Kassandra had fallen in love with Critical Role during a binge marathon as they recovered from surgery in 2016. “I was instantly hooked, and have been watching and cosplaying from it ever since,” they say.

For their Mollymauk cosplay, they cracked their knuckles and began with the most difficult piece first, the intricately detailed coat.

The one aspect of the design that was indispensable was Ariana Orner’s official portrait of Mollymauk.

“Once I did decide to cosplay Molly, I probably stared at the official portrait for at least an hour, solid, just trying to nail down designs that I thought I recognized and research ones I wasn’t sure of,” Kassandra says. “I had it saved to every device I have so that I could look at it all throughout the 18 hours it took me to draft out the final embroidery design.

“Every time I look at it I see something new—new things I wish I had incorporated when I did this piece, that I’ll just have to save for the second go-around. And even after the patterning was done, I had it out constantly for color references and such. The artwork was a constant companion in this project.”

For the coat, Kassandra estimates it took 191 hours to complete, with 165 hours of that spent on the embroidery alone. Their attention to detail and accuracy is obvious in the tricky needlework.

Kassandra originally chose Mollymauk to cosplay because he reminded them of some of their favorite people from renaissance festivals.

“The more episodes I watched the more I fell in love with the character,” they say. “I absolutely love his ‘try everything once’ attitude.”
