The Critical Role and Steamforged Kickstarter Campaign Is Mini and Mighty

Each week here at Geek & Sundry we take a look at new and upcoming exciting titles on Kickstarter! This week we’re featuring The Official Critical Role Miniatures Kickstarter – a partnership between Critical Role (Geek & Sundry’s live Dungeons & Dragons show featuring Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer and his troupe of fellow voice actors) and Steamforged Games!

Admit it, we all dream about playing alongside Critical Role characters like Vex and Trinket, Scanlan, Fjord, Beau, and the others. And thanks to Steamforged Games and their amazing miniatures, those dreams can now come true—but you have just a few days left to get in on the action.

The Kickstarter campaign has been a wild success, reaching funding quickly and approaching an incredible one million dollars. Rather than stretch goals and additional miniatures, it was important for the Steamforged team to make the campaign as simple and easy to understand as possible. Just one pledge tier rewards the supporter with all Vox Machina and Mighty Nein minis, plus ally and first Campaign 2 guest star Shakäste.

These sets will be available in a commercial release later, the FAQ indicates, but by getting in on the Kickstarter, supporters will also receive an exclusive Taryon Darrington and Doty, plus Pumat Prime and three Pumat Sols.

Minis are made of PVC plastic and stand 28 mm tall, with no assembly required. Just paint and play!

The Team Behind the Minis

Steamforged’s enthusiasm for the project mirrors the community’s obvious passion. The team consists of fans of Critical Role themselves; in fact, the project started as a form of fan art.

“When the new campaign started, we were about three episodes in when I sat down to make a couple of minis as fan art,” says Russ Charles, Lead Sculptor for Steamforged Games. “I did Nott and Caleb first, and the reaction online was so positive I set about creating the entire cast for the Mighty Nein.”

Russ started chatting with the cast online, and soon Steamforged realized there might be an opportunity to partner officially.

“Once we started to get some feedback and really see the positive Critter response, we reached out to [Geek & Sundry Contributing Editor Teri Litorco] to see if there was any interest in working together,” says Commercial Director Charles Agel. “[The Critical Role] team were thrilled with the idea and how closely the sculpts had captured the feel of these characters whom they’d developed over the past several years.”

Mat Hart, Creative Director at Steamforged Games, says that once the project got underway, the collaboration with the cast was effortless.

“It’s amazing the depth of understanding everyone has about their characters,” he says. “I love how the cast are able to express the key points in a way that makes it easy for us at Steamforged to breathe real life into the minis.”

Charles agrees. “I was particularly impressed working with Taliesin,” he says, “who had a whole folder of reference material about Molly, including different cloth weaves from various period pieces. It’s those sorts of details which help our creative team really understand where the crew was coming from with their characters.”

Each of the team has their own favorite mini. Mat can’t choose just one, but Beau and Yasha are both dear to his heart; Charles says his jaw hit the floor when he saw the Shakäste mini. Russ is all about Grog.

“The sculpt captures the essential Grogness in the attitude and pose,” Russ says. “Moreover, Ben (the sculptor, and my brother) has somehow captured enough of Travis in the face that it is undeniably his character.”

The Critter Hug of… Life

The campaign will likely surpass a million dollars, blowing away its original funding goal. The team at Steamforged is both humbled and grateful for the warm response.

“A lot of hard work has been done behind the scenes by two great teams to offer the best project we could put out there,” says Russ. “I’ve been stunned by the reception and the positive vibes from the Critters. As a fan myself, it is a personal delight to see our work so enthusiastically embraced.”

Mat agrees. “The Critical Role community is made up of such a diverse group of amazing people from all over the world that seem to have one thing in common,” he says, “their unending positivity and pure celebration of all things creative.”

“We’ve invested hundreds of hours into the adventures of Vox Machina and have been with the Mighty Nein right from the start,” Charles says. “When you look at these miniatures, it’s not just a lump of plastic. It’s an effigy of all those fond memories and the new ones being created weekly.”
