The Best Characters Named April

It’s the beginning of April aka the month that every person named April dreads. There aren’t that many of us out there so when one pops up, especially in pop culture, we cling to them. For some reason, you take ownership in a character when they have your name. Here are my favorite people…from one April to another.

April Patterson (For Better or For Worse)
The Pattersons were the central focus of comic strip “For Better or For Worse” and in 1991, they added another member. Born on April Fool’s Day April Patterson, came into her own as a character and became a great role model. After being saved at four years old by the family sheepdog, she grew into a talented musician and was set to study veterinary medicine when the series ended.

April (Hannah and Her Sisters)
Portrayed by Carrie Fisher, April was Holly’s (Dianne Wiest) friend and business partner. Not only were they both actresses working together to make a buck, April and Holly rivaled each other in auditions as well as for the affections of the same man (Sam Waterston). Arguably Woody Allen’s best written film (it was even submitted for the Pulitzer Prize in 1986), April is one of the most attention grabbing characters and Fisher’s performance is something to be seen.

April O’Neil (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
I mean, duh. First appearing as computer programmer in 1984, April O’Neil has become an icon across all platforms including comics, tv, and film. As a reporter for Channel 6 News, O’Neil is vital part to the Ninja Turtles, giving them access to leads and alerting them of any possible danger. O’Neil has inspired many a young female geeks with her independence and intelligence and oh yeah, that killer yellow jumpsuit.

April Burns (Pieces of April)
One of Katie Holmes’ more interesting roles is April Burns. A daughter who moved out on her own earlier than most, she preps Thanksgiving for them in her tiny New York apartment ready to brace the inevitable criticism. A brilliantly executed film and character portrayal, as far as dysfunctional families go, Burns is a trooper for putting up with any of it.

April Ludgate (Parks and Recreation)
Everyone’s spirit animal is April Ludgate. Epically played by Aubrey Plaza who was essentially unknown when she took on the role as Leslie Knope’s intern, there isn’t anything more we can say that hasn’t already been said about Ludgate. She’s simply the best.
