Take Your Inspiration Dice With Vox Machina’s Handpicked Playlists

Maybe you never knew that the cast of Critical Role handpicked music playlists for their characters, or it’s just been a long time since you listened to them. But as we celebrate all things Critical Role this week for the 100th episode, there’s no better time to tune in.

In these playlists, you’ll find inside peeks into the characters you’ve come to know and love that you won’t find anywhere else.

Grog (Travis Willingham)

Mood: Smash

Grog has contributed two playlists over the years, in 2015 and 2016, and both are perfect for a workout or working up a rage. But you’ll also find songs from Grog’s softer side, like “Let It Go” and “C is For Cookie”:

Pretty sure Cookie Monster is either Grog’s mentor or a close relative. And if “C” is for Cookie, “A” is for Ale.

Keyleth (Marisha Ray)

Mood: Contemplative

Keyleth has been on a long journey both to complete her rite of passage and find out who she is. Her music playlists from 2015 and 2016 reflect that path, along with her love of her Vox Machina family, described this comment on a Chvrches song:

There have been many a time where we have proven the fact that Vox Machina is greater than the sum of its parts.

Percival de Rolo (Taliesin Jaffe)

Mood: Angst/punk with a little bit of Hamilton

Percy also has two playlists under his belt from 2015 and 2016, reflecting some of the biggest events that happened to him in Whitestone and in his life. If you’re a fan of Percy waxing philosophical, you’ll find a lot to love in these playlist descriptions:

I often refer to Percy as a terrible person, and I know that mystifies people. He’s not a mustache-twirling villain, he’s that guy you can count on MOST of the time.

Pike (Ashley Johnson)

Mood: Contemplative

Like Pike herself, this playlist shows that there’s a lot of introspection going on under an upbeat exterior. Pike struggles with the light and the dark, illustrated by her pick “Love is All” by The Tallest Man on Earth:

Pike continually has to fight her inner demons to stay good and pure and true. You try and you try, but sometimes you don’t win that fight.

Critical Role

Scanlan Shorthalt (Sam Riegel)

Mood: Eclectic

Just as Scanlan is likely to burst into a random song, these picks from 2015 and 2016 might seem a little random themselves–but they all have meaning for the Meat Man. Comparing the two lists is a personal look at where Scanlan’s path is taking him:

True fact: Scanlan’s backstory is loosely based on Eminem’s. He rose up from troubles and found salvation in his passion for music.

Vax’ildan (Liam O’Brien)

Mood: Contemplative

Vax’s playlists from 2015 and 2016 look back on where the twins have been and forward to where their journeys may be taking them. He also has a certain half-elf always on his mind, but the Raven Queen casts a long shadow on his thoughts:

At night, when Vax lays his head down to rest, he has started to foster the barest hint of hope for tomorrow. He almost believes it.

Vex’ahlia (Laura Bailey)

Mood: Upbeat/Contemplative

Vex’s character shines through in the playlists put together in 2015 and 2016. With “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” and “Learning to Fly” on the lists, Laura selected the perfect songs to sum up everyone’s favorite half-elven ranger and her friends:

Vox Machina. Such a crazy family of idiots thrown into a situation so much bigger than they are.

Various (Matthew Mercer)

Mood: Eclectic

While Dungeon Master Matt Mercer has shared just one playlist, there’s a wealth of characters and behind-the-screen tidbits to be discovered on it. On Matt’s list you’ll find unique insight into characters like the Briarwoods that you can’t find anywhere else:

This wonderfully strange, epic song helmed by my vocalist idol, Mike Patton, really speaks to the Briarwood’s burning commitment to one another and their mutual obsession that builds to a violent passion to do whatever it takes to protect their union.

Which songs would be on your D&D character’s playlist? Tell us in the comments.
