Some of the Biggest Games of 2016 Are Getting Sequels Already

It’s a basic desire. A reflex, really. What’s the first thing going through your head after you’ve played, and endlessly re-played, a game that’s really pushed all the right buttons? You want another one. Or at least, an extension of the magic. The companies who put out some of the most memorable hits in 2016 are well-aware of that; though they may have acted on it faster than even their most impassioned fans were ready for.

Follow-ups and add-ons to Terraforming Mars, Captain Sonar, and Clank! A Deck Building Adventure have already been announced, and they’re coming rather soon. We’ve collected what info we could find about them and gathered it all below for your convenience. Each one offers a different variety of upgrades and goodies, though it seems like all the designers brought the play to oceanic settings for one reason or another. The sea seems to be the scene for 2017. So, go ahead. Take a belly flop in, soak up the details, and let us know which one’s sure to make the biggest splash this year.

Terraforming Mars: Hellas & Elysium

Games1

“It rained on Mongo that morning.” That old chestnut was once thrown around to remind sci-fi writers that planets don’t have the same weather, or climate, or terrain, all over their surfaces. Just think about how different Alaskan forests are from the Saharan desert. Terraforming Forms is following that logic for its expansion pack, Hellas & Elysium, which offers an additional, double-sided game board that allows players to make-over other areas of the Red Planet. To be specific, Hellas covers Mars’ South Pole, while Elysium includes dry stretches of ore and sprawling oceans at a very distant area. The maps include new Awards and Milestones, thoroughly expanding the experience for those dreaming of making a more Earth-like Mars. There’s a bit more information on this double-sided expansion here.

Captain Sonar: Upgrade 1

game3

Details aren’t as plentiful regarding Asmodee’s expansion of tense submarine warfare at the moment. The original took a much deeper dive into that old Battleship setting, inviting players to take up the roles of submariners competing for undersea resources in a caustic future’s treacherous aquatic war. Everybody found out last year that trying to locate and exterminate a rival ship crew is much more challenging than it sounds. We expect that sort of combat will get all the more complex when this upgrade adds five new weapons and six new maps. Again, details are scarce presently, but Boardgame Geek already has a listing for this particular title, now.

Clank! Sunken Treasures

Games2

Again, game designers are apparently just looking to the waters in 2017. This follow-up to Clank! A Deck Building Adventure trades dragon-infested subterranean caverns for watery depths replete with scary sea monsters. The expansion offers two partially-flooded maps which are just begging to be explored, and pilfered. Both offer new environmental challenges, new dungeon deck cards, and new persistent monsters that need to be vanquished. Oh, and there is still a big, nasty dragon to contend with. Keep checking out its listing at Boardgame Geek as details continue to get collected.

Are any other hits from 2016 in serious need of a follow-up, and fast? What other games are you looking forward to in 2017? Sound off in the talkback.
