RICK & MORTY VS. DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: +1d6 Shots at Being Cool

Powered by Geek & Sundry

Like many, I am a huge fan of sci-fi and a massive lover of roleplaying games. When I heard that Rick & Morty were taking on Dungeons & Dragons I didn’t think I could add another ampersand to make it any cooler. IDW Publishing is releasing Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons #1 on Wednesday August 29th, 2018. What more could you want? While not all of us have access to a portal gun, we can still take a trip to learn more! (Note – this overview is spoiler free!)

Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons #1 (of 4)

First and most importantly of all, we’ve got Patrick Rothfuss collaborating with Jim Zub to take us on a tri-dimensional fantasy adventure for all of reality’s most dysfunctional family playing the world’s greatest role-playing game. Patrick Rothfuss, for those that are unaware (like my goofy self), is the multiple award-winning, bestselling author of  The Kingkiller Chronicle series and Jim Zub is a Dungeons & Dragons fan-favorite writer of Avengers and Wayward.

So what happens when our nerdy, maladjusted Morty needs to learn how to play Dungeons & Dragons because all of the cool kids at his school are playing? Well, of course, his hard-drinking, old-school grandpa Rick is going to show him how to score those critical hits and ensure that charisma is his dump stat. Not all of us have access to alternate reality augmentation technology, but we can at least try to emulate the sheets that brought their characters to life. Whether you’re delving dungeons, pounding mead, or some combination of both then these comics will have you covered.

Honestly, I’m really surprised Rick’s character sheet isn’t messier than noted above.

All of this is going to be presented by IDW Publishing in conjunction with ONI PRESS! You don’t get to see mash-ups within mash-ups that frequently these days. Coupling all of these cool stories together is artist Troy Little, who is a multi-Eisner nominated artist of Fear & Loathing in Las VegasAngora Napkin, and The Powerpuff Girls.

Taking a Peek

What an all-star cast of writers and artists to bring Rick & Morty into the world of Dungeons & Dragons from an amazing set of publishers. I know I couldn’t wait to see how this 4 part series pans out for these goofy characters. As is expected, it’ll be interesting to see what saving throws they fail and what the true quest set before them will be!

I was grateful enough to receive a preview copy of Issue 1 and I have to say that there are few better times than now to let Rick & Morty get their hands on the shining jewel that is Dungeons & Dragons. We get to see Rick proud of his grandson, Morty, for actually getting into the game! Unfortunately for Morty, Rick takes him back OG style to the beginning before the days of 5th edition. Additionally, Rick does a good job of explaining the game to Morty through the panels in a way that even the most suave of Dungeon Masters have difficulty with. What else could be expected from the smartest man in the multiverse?

Make sure to check out the alternate covers as well from Sara Richard and Tess Fowler. There are so many amazing pieces of art that at $3.99 USD, you can’t really go wrong even for pieces of art!
