Red (Paint) Alert! Mines N Crafts Begins Construction on the USS Sally Ride

This week on Mines N Crafts, hosts Amy Dallen, Stef Woodburn, and Gina DeVivo cracked open a model kit of an Intrepid class starship that Amy picked up during her time at Star Trek Las Vegas. While the model may have been of the USS Voyager, Amy, Stef, and Gina dubbed it the USS Sally Ride in honor of Geek & Sundry’s Shield of Tomorrow.

None of them had experience assembling a model starship before, but Amy, Stef, and Gina were determined to paint it and put it together just as well as the shipbuilders at Utopia Planitia.

Here are a few bits of wisdom for getting started that the hosts of Mines N Crafts learned along the way.

Paint before you glue and assemble. Gina researched the steps to take before tackling the craft, almost all of which suggested painting first, and the model instructions also encouraged the same process.

Number your paints with a Sharpie to match the instruction guide. Stef, Amy, and Gina took a few minutes before opening any paint to label each one with the corresponding number in the instructions. It saves time in the long run.

Paint the background color on the pieces before starting the tiny details. Amy learned this the hard way.

Use a wash on the ship’s hull to give it an aged, lived-in look. “A wash is a really, really light mixture of a little bit of paint and water,” said Gina. “Brush it on, and then you take a cloth and wipe the excess off, and the dark color stays in the crevices.”

Use a toothpick or tweezers for painting the tiny details. You can also use the tweezers for the small decals that are otherwise hard to handle.

Paint with a crew. While you might all have different painting styles, painting with friends creates a ship that truly belongs to a crew. “A crew is about bringing different people and talents together,” said Amy.

Catch Gina, Stef, and Amy on Mines N Crafts every Wednesday at 4PM Pacific on the Geek & Sundry Twitch channel, and become a subscriber to hop on the sub-only Minecraft server.
