Pokémon Sun and Moon starters, release date, and everything else you want to know

Pokémon Sun and Moon starters, release date, and everything else you want to know

In a video announcement this morning, the Pokémon Company International officially revealed the first bits of information for the upcoming 3DS games Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon.

The games, which will release on November 18, are a brand new generation of Pokémon, the second new generation of Pokémon to be made for the 3DS after 2013’s Pokémon X and Pokémon Y.

The trailer showed off the new paradise region of Alohla, and while we haven’t gotten direct confirmation yet, speculation is that the region may be based off of Hawaii. The tropical plants, volcanoes, Tiki-looking statues, and even the musical arrangements may be a good hint there.

With the trailer we also got the official reveal of three of the most important Pokémon for any new game, the elemental starters that all trainers will get to pick from at the beginning of the game. Let’s take a look!

First off, the grass quill Pokémon, Rowlet:

Name: Rowlet
Category: Grass Quill Pokémon
Height: 1 ’00 “
Weight: 3.3 lbs.
Type: Grass/Flying
Starting Move: Leafage

The grass starter this time around is Rowlet, a grass owl. Rowlet is the only dual-type of the three starter Pokémon, at least so far. That could change as they evolve down the line, of course. Rowlet attacks using kicks, as well as the razor-sharp leaves that makes up its feathers. It looks cute, but I wonder what Hoot-Hoot and Notowl think about another owl Pokémon joining the family.

Next up, the fire-type starter, Litten (Get it…it’s a lit, kitten?):

Name: Litten

Category: Fire Cat Pokémon
Height: 1 ’04 “
Weight: 9.5 lbs.
Type: Fire
Starting Move: Ember

So much for a sleepy kitty. Litten’s fur is rich in oils, and by licking and grooming itself is able to make hairballs which it can ignite and turn into fireballs. Litten joins a litany of other cat Pokémon, so it will have a bunch of other kitties to fight over cat nip with. I’m also curious if it’s dark coloring may hint at a future dual Dark type added down its evolutionary line?

And don’t worry water-type fans, we haven’t forgotten about you, either:

Name: Popplio
Category: Sea Lion Pokémon
Height: 1 ’04 “
Weight: 16.5 lbs.
Type: Water
Starting Move: Water Gun

Popplio is a bit of an odd one. It’s weird. It’s goofy. The sea lion Pokémon is able to make balloons made out of water and then use those for attacks, as well as acrobatic stunts. So pretty much it’s a performing circus sea lion. Or maybe part clown.

The starters weren’t the only Pokémon revealed, though. We also got a glimpse of the two box art (and presumably legendary) Pokémon. Pokémon Sun will feature a lion, and Pokémon Moon will feature a pretty dang awesome looking bat Pokémon. I think that just sealed its fate of me picking up Moon. We weren’t given names for either of the two new Pokémon, so let the speculation begin over just who these two are, what they will be called, and what their exact type will be. Fire seems a safe bet for the lion, and maybe dark for the bat? Or psychic. We’ll have to wait and see, I suppose!

Wings, or roars? Which will you pick? I’m totally team #PokémonMoon.
