‘Please Stand By’ Sets Dakota Fanning As A Star Trek Fan Boldly Going To Live Her Dream

Every Monday at 7:00 PM PT, a talented crew roleplays their way through the galaxy to fulfill a mission: to boldly go where no one has gone before. Follow the adventures of the USS Sally Ride on Shield of Tomorrow on Twitch.

Fan fiction is one of the things that keep a fandom alive. These stories sustain the demand between the official entries into a series and let fans live out their fantasies, be they taking command of a Starfleet vessel or going into detail on what happens when crew members hook up. Star Trek has been home to fan fiction for decades–there’s even a rumor the term “slash” came out of the fanfictions pairing Kirk with Spock or McCoy. Our own beloved Shield of Tomorrow is a very elaborate form of fan fiction and that’s what RPGs based on licensed properties are built to create. So when writer Michael Golamco was searching for a fandom to frame his story about an autistic young woman, Star Trek seemed…a logical choice.

Please Stand By stars Dakota Fanning as Wendy Welcott. Wendy spends her days doing the same things; seeing her counselor, working at Cinnabon, and watching Star Trek. She also spends much of her time writing fan fiction. When a $100,000 opportunity to submit an official script arises, she must break out of her bubble to get her script into the proper hands. She might be able to imagine what happens when Spock shows up on Deep Space Nine, but Wendy’s never had an adventure she could call her own.

What follows is a road trip movie as Wendy heads to L.A. to ensure her script gets delivered. The film also stars Toni Collette as Wendy’s counselor, Star Trek Into Darkness alum Alice Eve as Wendy’s sister and Patton Oswalt as a Klingon-speaking police officer who connects with Wendy during her journey. A lot of films have used fandom in the past as a means of comedy, but Please Stand By looks to use this fandom as a way for the main character to mature without leaving her love of Star Trek behind.

Please Stand By will be released in theaters and on various streaming services on January 26th.
