Our 5 Most Anticipated RPG Releases At Gen Con

Even though its grown as a board game convention in the past few years, Gen Con’s heart still belongs to tabletop roleplaying games. Many RPG companies still structure their publishing year around having a big release in Indianapolis and this year does not disappoint.  We’ve collected the releases everyone is scrambling to get here along with booth numbers (for those at the con) and publishers’ links (for those battling their FOMO who are not in Indy).

Legend of the Five Rings Beginner Game

Last year, Fantasy Flight Games made waves by bringing back Legend of the Five Rings as a blockbuster new card game. Many gamers fell in love with Rokugan through its original tabletop RPG and they will have a chance to step back into to world with this boxed set. The boxed set shared many similarities with the other Beginner Games produced for FFG’s Star Wars line. It includes pre-generated characters, some of the specialty dice the system uses and an introductory adventure based on the classic Topaz Championship with additional DLC featuring more characters and follow-up story for anyone who picks up the set.

The Witcher RPG

One of the most beloved video game RPG settings in recent history is making its way to the tabletop with a single core book. The Witcher series of games offer a slightly darker and grittier take on fantasy more akin to Game of Thrones than Lord of the Rings. Players can play Witchers like Geralt of Rivia with the other members of the party fleshing out companions that help the monsters stay down. The Witcher RPG is using a variation of the classic Fuzion system originally developed for Cyberpunk 2020, which makes sense given the same company is working on Cyberpunk 2074 for release soon.

Masks of Nyarlathotep

This legendary campaign for Call of Cthulhu lives again in a massive full-color volume. It’s a globetrotting adventure where players follow in the footsteps of Jackson Elias and his uncovering of a massive cult conspiracy dedicated to summoning the titular Elder God for some bad times in the 1920s. Players must fight cultists in Shanghai, Cairo, Kenya, London and more! (We love this adventure so much, we wrote a full article about the PDF release this summer). If Call of Cthulhu is not a game of choice, there’s also an expansion for Eldritch Horror that follows the same storyline.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay/Warhammer 40k Wrath & Glory

40K-8th-FI

The grim, dark universe of Warhammer is getting two RPGs from two different Games Workshop licensees this summer. Cubicle 7 is releasing the fourth edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay with an eye on returning to the career system of earlier editions that made characters a unique fit in the dark world. The dark future of the setting is explored in Wrath & Glory as players sign on to purge heresies in the name of the Emperor.

Vampire The Masquerade 5th Edition

V5_Diablerie

One of the most influential games of the 90s returns with an all-new edition at the show. The new version featured revamped (sorry) mechanics and storylines that walks back the arrival of Gehenna at the end of the original game line while updating the hows and whys of the Kindred for the new millennium. This Vampire is backed by Paradox Interactive and it raises the bar on slick game presentation that fits with a video game company known for lavish production values.
