Mr. Moonshine, a name that suggests the contrast of light and darkness, is a perfect descriptor of this alt-rock band’s sound. Brothers Anthony Pedroza (vocals, bass, guitar) and Andrew Pedroza (vocals, synth), Daysmel Muniz (guitar), and Ternell Cooksey (drums) are fearless in the creation of their bizarre, moody tracks that translate into a beautiful, mysterious sound with a theatrical flare.
Authenticity is a quality that this audience can easily recognize and responds to. The openness and honesty in their music and performance struck a chord with the Geek & Sundry audience. The band sat down to answer some of the Twitch community’s questions after their performance on Geek & Sundry Live.
BigDTex: Where did you guys meet?

Anthony:  I met Andrew when I was almost 3 in a hospital in Berkeley. I met Dice while working on “Lolpera” in 2011, and in 2012, I met Ternell.

Andrew: I met Daysmel and Ternell while performing an absurdist play called “Christmas at the Ivanovs.” Anthony was my first roommate as a 2 year old.

Daysmel: I met Ternell years ago in the first band I was in, “Bed Breakfast Man.”  We’ve been great friends and have been playing since. I met Andrew when he hopped on to a crazy Russian absurdist play called “Christmas At the Ivanovs” that my friends would do every December.  He and his musical partner Ellen Warkentine added music to the play and were incredible.  They continued on to write “LOLpera: An Epic Opera About Teh Internets” where I met Anthony, cast in the role of Lolrus.

Treebadger: How did you decide on your name?

Anthony: My son Orion was reciting a nursery rhyme from school called “Mr. Moonshadow”, we loved the idea.

aMiniMoore: Digging the sound fellas, who are some of your influences?

Anthony:  The Beatles, Arcade Fire, Muse, Radiohead, Tom Waits, Of Montreal

Andrew: My influences are Bjork, Mike Patton, Radiohead, ABBA, and David Bowie.

Daysmel: Opeth, Dungen, King Crimson, Miles Davis

TrevorTots: What’s your favorite soup?

Anthony: Tomato soup is my stand by, however some French onion soup really hits the spot.

Andrew: My favorite soup is butternut squash soup.

Daysmel: Pho or my mom’s noodle soup.

G & S: Where do you get the inspiration for your songs?

Anthony: I write from my heart, so most of my melodies and lyrics come from my feelings about what is going on around me. I get much of my inspiration from my human experiences.

Andrew: My songs come from the internal rhymes of my body. I hear melodies and beats in my head. Does that make me crazy?

Daysmel: Playing long enough until the moment strikes.  Things I hear, words I read. For me it’s kind of in the moment, and I like coming up with lots of different ideas but Anthony and Andrew are the main songwriters in the band.  I really enjoy working on all of our different ideas.

G & S: What do you geek out about?

Anthony:  Nintendo, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad. Most recently I started watch The 7 Deadly Sins, an anime on Netflix based off of a manga. It has some really fantastic story telling.

Andrew: I geek out about Clive Barker and Zelda.

Daysmel: RPGs. I’m currently loving The Witcher 3 and I am dying for Fallout 4! I also work at an aquarium and am fascinated by marine life. Also Arrested Development.

G & S: What was your experience like on the Geek & Sundry Twitch channel?

Anthony: One of my favorite sets we’ve ever played, the interaction with the G&S subscribers was amazing. The crew was top notch and knowledgeable and we even got to play Rock Band with the crew. (They were way better than us.)

Andrew: It was freaking awesome! I’m really proud to have been a part of the show. I want to live at the studio.

Daysmel: It was really cool. I had a great time and everyone was great on the chat and in real life. We all felt really comfortable on the show and the audience was very supportive. Playing Rock Band at the end ruled pretty hard.
