Meet Mollog’s Mob, WARHAMMER UNDERWORLDS’ Newest Warband

Warhammer Underworlds is a miniature wargame/board game hybrid that was first released in 2017 and whose first core set, Shadespire, made our best of list for 2017. The game is strategic, compelling, and accessible to any gamer who is inclined to card drafting, luck, and confrontation.

Nightvault, the second core set that adds mechanics for magic to the game, was released last year, and it’s just as compelling and the new warbands released since have added greater tactical options to the game. Games Workshop has now revealed the newest warband: Mollog’s Mob, which shifts the metagame significantly as well as brings a delightful character to the game.

Mollog’s Mob consists of 4 models: Mollog and 3 support creatures that are so inconsequential that they can’t hold objectives. The warband itself is basically a single model with seven wounds, and as described in the reveal, “Mollog is unique among Fighters in Warhammer Underworlds, in that he can charge even if he has a move token, and when he’s Inspired, he can charge even if he has a charge token”.

The release shifts Warhammer Underworld’s metagame (the strategic paradigm of the game) but also adds a layer of character and flavor to the game. There’s a distinct personality that Mollog brings and a motivation that’s clearly outlined, as Games Workshop put it: “Mollog just wants a nap – and he’ll smash the skull of anyone who gets in his way.” It’s funny to think about a miniature wargame in terms of silly characterizations, but that flavor is very much a part of what makes Games Workshop’s games so very endearing. The emotional connections players create with their miniatures aren’t always about how effective they are on the table, but can sometimes be how entertaining and compelling they are in our own headcanon.
