How to Play: Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Game the Game is Geek & Sundry’s tabletop board game show that airs every Wednesday starting at 4PM PT on Twitch and Alpha. Join host Becca Scott as she breaks out some of the best boardgames the industry has to offer, with new guests each week!

This week, we’re tackling Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game! Originally released in 1995 as a collectible card game, Legend of the Five Rings is basically like Game of Thrones, but with samurai. (Read our full breakdown of the game, with insight from Fantasy Flight themselves, here.) The popular and long-running series has been adapted into an RPG, board games, novels, a Dungeons & Dragons featured campaign setting, and more.

Now, the new Legend of the Five Rings is an updated Living Card Game (LCG) presented by Fantasy Flight Games. The game pits you against another player as two samurai serving one of the seven Great Clans of Rokugan. Using a Dynasty Deck (for characters and holdings), Conflict Deck (of tactics and maneuvers), and your wits, you must compete for the Emperor’s favor through battle, courtly intrigue, and of course, duels!

Legend of the Five Rings is beloved by many passionate fans who love its intricate storytelling and complex history. But if you’re new to the game, don’t worry – Becca is here to teach you how to play before we dive in.

Tune in to tomorrow’s episode of Game the Game to see who comes out victorious in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game!
