How to Play: Dungeon Degenerates

Game the Game is Geek & Sundry’s tabletop board game show that will soon be returning to Twitch and Alphawith host Becca Scott playing games and talking about what’s new and exciting in the board game industry, with special guests every week. While the show is taking a short break, you can still check out Becca’s awesome how to play videos here on Geek & Sundry!

This week, Becca is showing us how to play Dungeon Degenerates. This dark fantasy board game blends roleplaying with a fast moving board game. The retro art feels very 80’s with black light inspired colors and punk zine artwork.

In a land where the Empire is in decline, the true adventure is merely surviving. You have escaped the dungeons and must use your wits and whatever weapons you can scrounge to find your fortune. Band with other adventurers or strike out on your own, the choice is up to you. You don’t have to compete with or stick together if you can’t agree on a path.

This game is a sandbox where you set the pace on how and where you explore. Don’t like how things are going in one region? It might be time to pack it up and move on to another one. Not only that, but there are multiple ways to approach any interaction. Combat not your thing? Maybe you can talk your way around that big monster.

Each region on the board has its own unique monsters and encounters. And don’t think you’re safe just because you’re in town. Nowhere is truly safe. Evil wizards are a work everywhere, bringing with them an endless supply of monsters to overtake the world.

Love your character? How about that epic gear from the last mission? Your character gains experience that carries over from game to game, and keeps the items they picked up. Customize your character with new skills and move on to bigger and badder missions.

Adding to the old school vibe is the use of only standard six-sided dice. Combat is super streamlined with each player only rolling once during their turn, so no more bogging down combat with complicated rolls. You get to decide the difficulty by customizing the monster and encounter decks. There are over a hundred different monsters, so you won’t get bored fighting off the same monster over and over. Complete your mission before the Hand of Doom descends on the board and unleashes evil magic on the land.

Are you up for the challenge? Only degenerates need apply for the unsavory missions throughout the land. If you’re in the mood for a retro feel, Dungeon Degenerates should be on your list to check out!
