Give (to Charity) A Little And Get A Lot of NUMENERA’s Ninth World On Humble Bundle

Give (to Charity) A Little And Get A Lot of NUMENERA’s Ninth World On Humble Bundle

A common question from new Game Masters is “Where do I start?” We’ve answered this question in the past, and a few tabletop gaming companies have banded together to provide assistance with New Gamemaster Month wrapping up at the end of January.  One of these companies, Monte Cook Games, is taking that commitment a step further. They’ve partnered with Humble Bundle to offer a bundle featuring their flagship game, Numenera.

Numenera is the award-winning game that helped bring Monte Cook Games into existence in 2012. Characters explore the long-lost wrecks of ancient civilizations a billion years in the future, creating a science fantasy dungeon crawl that explores the implications of Arthur C. Clarke’s famous quote “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

We’ve explored this world, the Ninth World, on Starter Kit. The underlying system, the Cypher System, has gone on to power many of their other games. It also powers Callisto 6, our RPG show set in the cyberpunk future. We’ve looked at the different tiers of the Humble Bundle and chosen our favorite books out of each one.

$1 Tier: Discovery and Destiny

Numemera launched a Kickstarter for a second edition a couple years ago and recently started to deliver the books created in the Kickstarter in October. Yes, that means that in this bundle, Monte Cook Games are selling the PDFs of the latest edition of their most popular game four months after it hit the streets.

Discovery does what you’d expect a new edition to do by tweaking rules, refreshing classes and refocusing the game based on feedback from players of the original edition. One of the big changes are the concept of player intrusions where the PCs can spend XP for a bit of narrative control based on their class. It’s a strong second edition for the game.

Destiny is the bigger coup for the money, because it expands the scope of the game. It gives an answer to the question “What do you do when you’ve not in the wreck of an ancient phase drive ship?” The answer is shockingly simple; you bring back the cool bits and install them in your base/town to make it cooler. The book adds three classes meant who focus on keeping the home fires burning, a great discussion on how to build a fictional community and some fun crafting rules that will make anyone who’s gotten deep into Witcher 3’s potion rules feel right at home.

$8 Tier: Tides of Numenera The Explorer’s Guide

Even though it’s been around for less than a decade, the Ninth World has a lot of interesting areas and visuals that help inspire GMs for their own tales in the setting. These impossible vistas helped inXile Entertainment create Torment: Tides of Numenera in 2017. The video game brought back many members of the team that created the legendary Torment: Planescape to tell a similar tale in the future fantasy world of Numenera. The game is a great way for folks unable to get a tabletop game going a way to experience the strangeness of the setting and this book lets GMs bring in gorgeous concept art, mechanical tidbits, monsters and class choices for a wider experience.

$15 Tier: Jade Colossus: Ruins of the Prior Worlds

The ruins of the previous worlds are the central feature of this game. This book includes an all-in-one example of a massive ruin as well as the communities that have sprung up around it. The bundle comes with a separate campaign that integrates this book but the neatest part of this book is the massive section of random charts, inspirations and suggestions that allow GMs to create flavorful, unusual and just straight up weird ruins in a matter of minutes.

Fans that get the whole bundle will take home $260 worth of RPG books for $15. But be careful, Delvers, because this portal to the Ninth World closes on February 6th.
