Get Your Gaming On at These Upcoming 2018 Video Game Conventions

Each week on Twitch and Alpha hosts Erika Ishii and Trisha Hershberger talk video games with special industry guests, insightful coverage and a ton of audience interaction on our show Game Engine. Be sure to tune in every Tuesday starting at 4 PM PT to learn about what’s new and cool in the world of video games.

The new year is here and with it comes a ton of new video games. The wait for releases can be tough, but thankfully there are also a bunch of conventions where you can try out the latest upcoming games, hang out with your favorite media personalities, buy cool merch, attend panels, check out astounding cosplay, and basically immerse yourself in everything digital entertainment has to offer. Here is a list of upcoming conventions and events to keep you rolling in video-gameyness for the next 6 months.

January 2018


This weekend, January 4th-7th, you can check out MAGFest in Gaylord National Hotel & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. Short for “Music And Gaming Festival,” MAGFest is a celebration of gaming and video game music. It is a huge fan-run event where you can meet industry creators likeOutstar, Anthony Burch, Man at Arms, and Brentalfloss or check out charity events for Child’s Play, shop for rare and out of print games at the marketplace, play 200 arcade and pinball machines for free, or participate in all of the fun workshops and events.

PAX South

PAX South takes place at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas January 12th. You can see performances by Acquisitions Incorporated, Bit Brigade, MC Frontalot, Mega Ran, Sammus, Super Mes, and theVideri String Quartet. There are other PAX events that happen throughout the year so make sure to check out their main page and see if one is happening near you!

GoGames360 Dallas

If you stick around Texas till the 26th, GoGames360 will be taking place in Dallas at the Hyatt Regency.They not only have video games, but also tabletop games, and a physical games area where you can play Dodgeball, Laser Tag, Bubble Soccer, Quidditch, and more.

March 2018

Game Developers Conference (GDC)

The Game Developers Conference (GDC) is a huge professional convention that takes place March 19th at the Moscone Conference Center in San Francisco, CA. There is a fantastic section for experimental game designers to show off their latest mad-scientist creations like Space Box: The Journey out of the Box game as shown in the article’s top image. If you are an aspiring game designer or just love learning more about game development, GDC is the place to go.

East Coast Game Conference

For East Coasters interested in game development, the East Coast Game Conference is great for networking and collaboration. It takes place at the Raleigh Convention Center in North Carolina on April 17th.

Geek Out

If you want to get your video game fix alongside a breath of fresh air the Geek Out is for you. This convention is an outdoor festival celebrating everything geeky! Set at Hannon’s Camp America in College Corner, OH, Geek Out has everything from wrestling matches, cosplay circus performances, IRL Mario Kart races, tournaments and more. If you go, just don’t forget to bring your tent as even the housing options are in the great outdoors.

E3 2018

E3 is one of the best known and biggest video game conventions around. June 12th of this year, E3 will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center in California. Last year the convention has over 68,400 attendees and video game greats like Hideo Kojima, Jack Black, Tim Schafer, Ed Boon, and Randy Pitchford made appearances. A lot of companies announce their games at E3 so if you want to be the first to know about upcoming releases, this is the convention to attend.


If you are looking for a convention that is less overwhelming and more fan-focused that the bigger conventions, check out TooManyGames. Held at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in PA on June 22-24th, TooManyGames hosts music concerts, panels by famous YouTubers, and a ton of vendors who specialize in retro games, video game art, and home-made games like unofficial sequels, custom games, and ROM hacks all loaded on real working cartridges for your old systems.
