Geek & Sundry Takes BlizzCon 2017 By Storm

BlizzCon 2017 filled the Anaheim Convention Center with fans of Blizzard Entertainment games like World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm, and more. Geek & Sundry and Blizzard have a close relationship together — and not just because Darin De Paul is the Mayor of Blizzard — so, of course, some of your favorite hosts were there for all of the action.

Darin De Paul

Geek & Sundry hosts are the heart of many Blizzard games, from Laura Bailey as Jaina Proudmoore in World of Warcraft to Darin De Paul as Reinhardt in Overwatch. Their voices, along with Matthew Mercer, played a huge role in kicking off BlizzCon 2017 in heart-pounding (and one slightly heartbreaking) trailers announcing what the future holds for Blizzard.

Overwatch has given fans some incredible animated shorts. Not only is the dazzling animation and style a treat for the eyes, the stories are rich with character development and personality.

During the opening ceremony, the Overwatch team brought Darin De Paul on stage to introduce the animated short featuring himself as the voice of Reinhardt.

Darin was clearly emotional about his involvement with the character and with Blizzard, feeling warmly welcomed both by the company and its community of players. “As a person, you guys have been amazing to me,” Darin told Blizzard Vice President Jeff Kaplan during the ceremony.

At the Geek & Sundry “Connect and Inspire Through Play” and “Voices of Overwatch” panels at the convention, he revealed that his portrayal of Reinhardt is inspired by his father, making the animated short all that more poignant.

World of Warcraft

Laura Bailey has long been known to World of Warcraft fans as the voice of Jaina Proudmoore, hero of the Alliance. At BlizzCon 2017, her stirring speech introduced the upcoming expansion for the game and a world at war.

Laura also joined the “Connect and Inspire Through Play” panel, playfully revealing that she just really wants to be an elf in real life.

Hearthstone: Kobolds & Catacombs

Hearthstone also unveiled a new expansion during BlizzCon with a dungeon-crawling trailer featuring a familiar voice to anyone who has watched Critical Role.

Matthew Mercer not only narrates but sings during the trailer, catching not only fans by surprise but his friends. At the “Connect and Inspire Through Play” panel hosted by Erika Ishii and Trisha Hershberger, Matt said he was just as surprised that it was revealed during the opening ceremony — he found out by text messages flooding his phone as he got ready to head to the convention center.

Matt found being asked to narrate the tongue-in-cheek homage to Dungeons & Dragons “delightful irony,” he said.

Connect and Inspire Through Play

Joining Darin, Laura, Matt, Erika, and Trisha on the panel were Liam O’Brien, Jason Charles Miller, and Taliesin Jaffe, who have all lent their voice talents to Blizzard games. During the candid discussion, it was clear that they shared Darin’s feeling of inclusion from the communities of both Blizzard and Geek & Sundry.

“The community has given me the courage to be more myself,” said Jason.

“We can actually be ourselves,” Laura agreed.

Through that authenticity, the Geek & Sundry community has been forged and remains strong. If you missed the panel live, don’t fret: you watch it now on the Blizzard site.
