Furiosa Fans (Sort-of) Get their Wish with Mad Shelia

Furiosa Fans (Sort-of) Get their Wish with Mad Shelia

Plans for Charlize Theron headlining her own Mad Max sequel may or may not ever manifest, but anybody still wishing for a heroine to rise up and take the lead in a post-Apocalyptic flick has got something fairly close, right now.

With a plot following the titular Shelia as she rescues a cargo-load of maidens from a horny warlord and his gang of roving brutes, Mad Shelia: Virgin Road unashamedly wears its inspirations on its sleeve. Anybody who hasn’t yet forgotten Fury Road can guess how the rest of Shelia’s misadventures play out. There are chaotic car chases in the desert, villains dressed in football gear, and plenty of (entirely unconvincing) explosions. Watch on.

Some of those shots seem like exact recreations, don’t they? At least it looks like the cast knows exactly what kind of movie they’re in, and they’re having a gas with it. The Chinese company producing Mad Shelia, Netflix-esque VOD streaming service TenCent Video, has already shot a sequel, Revenge of the Road, for release in 2017.

In the longer view, this might be the best evidence that George Miller succeeded in his bid to resuscitate a franchise that’d been dormant for three decades. The Road Warrior made such a impact on worldwide film that pretty much every country responded with its own post-Apocalyptic knock-off throughout the 80s. From 1990: Bronx Warriors to the Blood of Heroes, there were so many homages that the sub-genre earned its own label, “wasteland cinema.”

And let’s no forget how the original Mad Max was produced on a shoestring budget itself. Fans introduced to the franchise through Fury Road‘s big budget set pieces are usually surprised to see how the first movie’s crew obviously just used available locations. The flick features one of the most quaint and suburban future ruins every depicted on film.

Would you stream Mad Shelia? Could it tide you over until a proper Furiosa movie? Let your voice be heard in the talkback.
