Final Trailer for Russian Superhero Movie Guardians Dials Up the Insanity

Guardians–the Soviet superhero movie that seized the world’s attention like a pinky toe in a bear trap–finally comes to theaters in February. We’ve covered its over-the-top trailers before, all the while wondering if anything could ever top the delightful absurdity of a jacked-up bear-man laying glorious waste with a mini-gun.

Well, turns out we’d only been seeing half of the transformation up until now. As this final trailer reveals, the skinwalking soldier in question, Ursus (otherwise known as “Wildman”), can actually go full beast mode. Gasp in awe as you watch this bear pounce on mechanical spiders and take on cyborg monstrosities in one-on-one combat! Then cover your mouths for a giggle as this ferocious creature gives piggyback rides to his comrades, and awkwardly struggles to fit into a cramped elevator with them.

Just… just… just watch, OK?

We’ll put our money on the bear winning that last fight…

Now, we actually do know a bit more about this movie’s plot, now. The big, bald baddie with all the cyber gear is actually named August Kuratov, and it’s his “Modul-1” machine that creates the whole robot legion that runs over Moscow in the movie. Naturally, Mr. Kuratov has aims to take over the world once he’s done with Russia, and that’s where the Guardians come in.

The four superhumans were created during the Cold War to defend the USSR against outlandish threats like Kuratov. Interestingly, while people keep comparing this quartet to the Avengers, they in fact share the Fantastic Four’s elemental power scheme. Tattooed borscht chef Xenia gets her powers from water, for example. Each member also represents a different ethnic group from the old Soviet republics. Ler the “Landman,” who can control rocks, is from Armenia, while Khan the windman, with all his huge blades, is from Kazakhstan. Who says a silly superhero movie can’t teach you a little about global history?

Are you excited for this nutty movie? Sound off in the talkback.
