Final Fantasy: A History of Success

How do you cover the elaborate and prestigious history of, arguably, gaming’s most popular and successful franchises? In the case of Final Fantasy, you let history and success speak for itself. Since its introduction to Japanese gaming consoles in 1987, Final Fantasy has graced the screens of millions of homes and fulfilled dreams for countless fans ever since. Who would have thought that almost 30 years later, the game would be celebrating its 14th sequel and 15th edition to the franchise (not to mention the many spin-offs)? We take a look at the path that Final Fantasy has taken from birth to Final Fantasy XV.

It all starts with Hironobu Sakaguchi, the father of Final Fantasy. In a struggle to finally strike it rich in the competitive gaming industry, Sakaguchi released Final Fantasy as his last ditch effort. What followed would change his life, and the lives of countless gamers everywhere. The popular fantasy game featured a unique mix of anime-style animation, sci-fi action sequences, and cinematic storytelling which broke the mold in a relatively story-less industry. Spawning sequels, merchandising opportunities, films, and cartoons, Final Fantasy has become a behemoth in the world of video games. Very few games even come close to the continued success and competitive nature that Final Fantasy has brought in its elaborate history.

A unique aspect of Final Fantasy’s string of sequels, is the ever-developing and always changing story element. Each sequel plays like a new game, but also has plenty of references to the games of the past, while paving the way for games of the future. It has become Square Enix’s best-selling video game franchise, and has spanned across nearly every gaming console imaginable.

Arguably as impressive as the story arcs and gaming elements, the graphics and music helped creative a gaming experience that superseded all others. Featuring top of the line graphics, Final Fantasy pushed the boundaries of the most current game consoles, in addition to featuring a top-of-the-line soundtracks born from the elaborate mind of Nobuo Uematsu, and the many others who have followed in his footsteps. Final Fantasy, without a doubt, is the cream of the crop when it comes to the ultimate gaming experience.

Odds are, if you’ve played an RPG or any major video game in recent years, it is probable that there are certain elements of Final Fantasy tied into the gameplay. The franchise is responsible for completely legitimatizing the RPG genre, and has deep rooted influence in today’s video game culture.

With the release of Final Fantasy XV, next-gen console owners have the opportunity to continue the long-running legacy of the franchise in a new, epic edition to the franchise. With what promises to be one of the most stunning and exciting entries in the series, Final Fantasy XV will be another important bookmark in the ever-evolving history of Final Fantasy.
