Fans Use Rubik’s Cubes For SUPER MARIO BROS. Stop-Motion Animated Short

2017 is the 40th anniversary of Rubik’s Cube, but the popular 3D puzzle really hit its peak after making its American debut in 1980. Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. franchise was born five years later in 1985, and now both ’80s icons have been joined together for a very impressive feat of stop-motion animation.

Via Game Informer, the YouTube channel  Jugglersynchro used several Rubik’s Cubes to animate a Super Mario Bros. short that appears to have been inspired by the very first game in the series, complete with the classic music from the first level. To be honest, we’re not entirely sure how they were able to pull off the mastery of Rubik’s Cubes to create each image, but this seems like a perfect match. Within the clip, we get to see Mario use the Mushroom power-up to make himself “Super,” only to lose it to a Goomba before he defeats Bowser’s creature with a jump.

This video is especially fitting, because Mario creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, is a big fan of Rubik’s Cubes. Back in 2010, EuroGamer reported that Miyamoto expressed his desire to make something that could rival the creation of Professor Rubik Ernő:

“For quite some time, I have viewed Professor Rubik, who created the Rubik’s Cube, as a sort of rival,” said Miyamoto. “I’ve always thought it would be cool to create something like a Rubik’s Cube. I’ve told lots of people about that. For 20 years, I’ve always thought that Rubik’s Cubes are great and I want to make something like them, but I still haven’t tried to. So I must be taking it easy. Regardless of whether I can or cannot do it, I could at least give it a shot, but I never have.”

Miyamoto’s signature creations have arguably had a larger culture impact than the Rubik’s Cubes, but we’d still love to see what he would come up with as an alternative puzzle for a modern audience. It’s not as if Mario and Rubik’s Cubes haven’t crossed paths before. In fact, Nintendo and Rubik’s Cubes teamed up for a  Super Mario Maker themed picture cube, which is still available online.
