Fan Uses HoloLens To Play Portal in a Real Life AR

When it comes to AR games, Pokémon GO is still probably the most well-known title among casual mobile gamers. But it will be far from the last game to take advantage of Augmented Reality to create an experience that mashes up the real world with fictional elements. Now, one fan has taken it upon himself to bring Portal to life as an AR experience.

Via CNET,  a recently posted YouTube video by Toronto developer Kenny Wang placed Portal in the real world. In the clip, we can see Wang use a Companion Cube to show that his portal gun actually works in this demo. No matter which surface Wang fires the portal gun at, the Companion Cube travels through the connected portals just as it would have within the actual game. And more impressively, the Cube correctly reacts to all of the surfaces in this video. The Cube even rolls down the stairs and lands on a table as if it was a real object.

Wang pulled this off using a development kit for Microsoft’s HoloLens, which is a mixed reality headset that isn’t quite yet widely available for consumers. Wang is a recently graduated college student who is looking for a job, and somehow we think that’s not going to be a problem for much longer. Wang even told CNET that Microsoft employees have already contacted him about his HoloLens creations.

It may take the HoloLens to pull off the illusions in Wang’s demo, but we think he’s hit upon a great idea. If Valve ever decides to bring Portal to mobile, then this would probably be the best way to do it. There could even be cakes to discover, even if the cake is a lie.

What did you think about Wang’s Portal AR demo? And would you play a Portal AR game created by Valve? Let us know in the comment section below!
