Dream Cast: The Little Mermaid

Dream Cast: The Little Mermaid

Nerdist posted an article listing 5 classic Disney cartoons they would love to see made into live-action films, Cinderella-style. While I totally agreed with their picks, I kind of went a bit overboard and decided to offer my dream casting suggestions to all 5 films they listed. So here are my suggestions for a live action adaptation of The Little Mermaid:

Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Ariel and Prince Eric
zooey deschanel joseph gordon levitt

I love watching these two together. They have great chemistry, and they are both incredibly adorable. Zooey Deschanel would be perfect in the role of the free-spirited Ariel, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt already proved in 500 Days of Summer that he has falling madly in love with Zooey down pat. Casting these two as Ariel and Eric has made me so incredibly excited about this fictitious movie that I’ve just fictitiously cast.

Jeff Bridges as King Triton

Jeff Bridges has that perfect balance of being a sweet man and being the fierce, trident-wielding god of the sea. He would probably intimidate the snot out of Prince Eric, and he’d be the most fearsome leader in all of the sea while exhibiting that he’s got that deep-thinking zen we’ve seen him display as The Dude and his Squarespace commercials. Also, he’s already got that King Triton beard down pat.

Laverne Cox as Ursula

I just want you to close your eyes and imagine Laverne Cox singing “Poor Unfortunate Souls”. It’s okay if you need to take a minute to image her singing an encore, because the more I think about this, the more I’m certain that she was probably born to play this role.

How would you dream cast a live-action version of The Little Mermaid? Let me know in the comments, and check back here for our other dream casting posts for Peter Pan, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Aladdin, and Pinocchio!
