DIY: Draw Your Own Adventures in Jester’s Sketchbook

Critical Role is Geek & Sundry’s live Dungeons & Dragons show, featuring Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer and his troupe of fellow voice actors. Catch them every Thursday night at 7:00 PM PT on the Geek & Sundry Twitch channel and on Alpha.

Like so many talented Critters, Laura Bailey’s character Jester doodles her favorite moments from her new adventures in a sketchbook when inspiration strikes. Keep your Critical Role drawings and ideas—or drawings of your own adventures!—in this one-of-a-kind DIY sketchbook inspired by the official art of the tiefling cleric.

What You Need

  • Blank chipboard journal
  • Dark blue glitter scrapbook paper
  • White linen texture scrapbook paper
  • Soft brown leather cording
  • Red and purple embroidery thread
  • Royal blue thin ribbon
  • Metallic silver ribbon
  • Scissors
  • School glue
  • Hot glue
  • Ruler

Get Started!

Step One: Begin by tracing the front cover on the back side of the blue glitter paper. Cut it out and glue it to the front cover; let dry, and repeat on the back cover.

Step Two: While the covers are drying, place the end of the blue ribbon on the back side of the glitter paper. Draw the end of Jester’s tail around the ribbon, and cut it out.

With the glitter side up, use the tail piece you just cut as a template and trace it on the paper. Cut it out.

Step Three: Cut the blue ribbon approximately six inches long, and glue one piece of the tail on the end (on the white side with the glitter facing out).

Step Four: Wrap and hot glue the silver ribbon on the blue ribbon, just below the tail shape. Glue the other glitter tail shape on top (again, with the glitter facing out) and trim the glitter paper as needed.

Step Five: Trace the front cover of the journal on the white scrapbook paper. Use the tracing as a guide to cut a strip about two inches wide and as long as the journal cover. Set aside.

Step Six: Cut three pieces of the brown leather cording, one piece of red thread, and one piece of purple thread. Cut them longer than the length of the journal you’re using.

Step Seven: Carefully hot glue the ends together, and let cool. With a friend or weight holding down the end you just glued, braid one leather cord, one cord and red thread, and one cord and purple thread together as a nod to Jester’s belt. (Make sure it’s as long as the length of the journal cover when braided.)

Step Eight: Next, wrap and hot glue a small piece of silver ribbon around both ends of the braid. You may need to trim the braid to the length of the journal first.

Step Nine: It’s time to put it all together! Glue the white strip of paper on the right side of the cover, and then hot glue the braid on top. Let dry/cool.

Next, hot glue the tail bookmark on the inside of the back cover. Let cool completely before you close the book again so you don’t glue it to the back page. Your sketchbook is complete!
