Codenames Partners with Disney For More Games

We’ve talked about how much we like Codenames and the excellent follow-up Codenames:Pictures, so you know we’re excited to bring news of Czech Games Editions’ latest spin on this party staple. USAopoly Inc. announced upcoming versions inspired by Disney, Disney•Pixar, and Marvel at the 2017 New York Toy Fair.

What’s coming?

Details are light for now but we know we’re getting two new Codenames titles. Codenames: Disney Family Edition will draw from over 90 years of Disney and Disney•Pixar titles as it adds characters and locations familiar to anyone who was a child for a least a few years. Mickey Mouse? Andy’s Room? We can’t be sure what will be in this new box but I’m looking forward to finding out. Codenames: Marvel Edition is described as “more of a traditional party game” but I’m assuming that the classic Codenames experience will be maintained. This edition will be full of Marvel favorites from Guardians of the Galaxy to Dr. Strange.

One thing we know for sure is that these editions will include images and art from Disney‘s popular universes. “We’re particularly enthusiastic about the artwork, as it includes a great mix of characters and locations that Disney, Disney•Pixar and Marvel fans will appreciate,” said USAopoly Inc. President and CEO John M. Davis.

A party game for everyone

Codenames won the 2016 Spiel de Jahres-the industry’s most prestigious award-thanks to its simple gameplay and widespread appeal. Players split into two teams each led by a “spymaster” whose job is to get their team to choose the right words from a 5×5 grid of clues. These clues are restricted to one word and one number. We can imagine the new editions will replace “tree” or “eagle” with “Spider-Man” or maybe a picture of the Genie from Aladdin.  The challenge comes from trying to navigate similar words or pictures. One of the clues is an instant lose Assassin; if the spymaster’s clue of “hot” makes their team guess Hades instead of the Palace of Agrabah then the other team might win immediately!

These new editions will release this fall. Keep an eye on your game store shelves, though note that these editions are limited to the North American market.

Have you played Codenames? What characters or locations do you hope  to see in these new games? Let us know in the comments!
