5 Exciting New Video Games From NY Comic Con 2018

Each week on Twitch and Alpha, hosts Erika Ishii and Trisha Hershberger talk video games with special industry guests, insightful coverage and a ton of audience interaction on our show Game Engine. Be sure to tune in every Tuesday starting at 4 PM PT to learn about what’s new and cool in the world of video games.

The past weekend NY was inundated with thousands of fans for Comic Con. There was a ton of exciting stuff to check out from star-filled panels, breath-taking sculptures, awesome toys, comics, and board games, and of course, some awesome, new video games to check out. Here are a few of the titles I got a chance to learn more about at this year’s convention.

Kingdom Hearts III

Square-Enix was showing off Kingdom Hearts III and, based on the demo, this game will be worth all the hype. Sora’s movement and fighting is smooth and deadly; inclining wall-running,  and epic summons to destroy your enemies. Kingdom Hearts III is set to hit stores January 25, 2019 and to celebrate it,  Square-Enix announced this weekend that they will be releasing a new complication of the series called Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far. The compilation will be available on October 30 and includes:

  • KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories
  • KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days (HD Remastered cinematics)
  • KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep Final MIX
  • KINGDOM HEARTS Re:coded (HD Remastered cinematics)

  • KINGDOM HEARTS Dream Drop Distance HD
  • KINGDOM HEARTS 0.2 Birth by Sleep –A fragmentary passage–
  • KINGDOM HEARTS χ Back Cover (movie)

I really enjoyed the Alan Wake series and now the development studio behind it is releasing a new action-adventure, the third-person shooter called Control. In it, you play Jesse Faden, a young woman who, while investigating an event from her childhood, discovers the headquarters of the secretive agency known as the Federal Bureau of Control. With Jesse’s discovery, an otherworldly faction call Hiss (I’m getting a Cobra vibe here) attacks the agency and things get very surreal. Your weapon and environments are constantly shifting and you can see the direct influence of books like Danielewski’s House of Leaves Vandermeer’s Annihilation on the game. Control is set to release sometime in 2019.

Just Cause 4

The Just Cause series is extremely popular with its wonderfully destructive environments, exciting action, and contraptions that let Rico Rodriguez explore the maps in all sorts of fun ways. Just Cause 4 takes it to the next level by adding extreme weather events like tornadoes, lightning storms, and more that can be used to your benefit. You also get a new customizable grappling hook which lets you cause all sorts of new mayhem like slingshotting yourself around or attaching hot air balloons and retractable cables to just about anything you can think of. The possibilities for shenanigans are endless in this new addition to the series and I can totally see myself spending more time messing around, coming up with Wile E. Coyote-style traps than following the actual story. You can get your hands on Just Cause 4 on December 4th.

Bendy and the Ink Machine

Old-timey cartoons like the original black and white Warner Brothers and Disney shorts are goofy and surreal. Bendy and the Ink Machine takes that aesthetic and turns it into a horror game dripping with insidious ink that makes me think twice about visiting Disney World anytime soon. The game is a first-person puzzle/action horror game where you explore an abandoned animator’s workshop where through some devilish magic, the animations have come to life (and not in a happy, fun way). Your objective is to solve the riddle of  Joey Drew Studios and survive the nightmare ink-creatures that lurk there.  The first few episodes of Bendy and the Ink Machine are already available on Steam, but come October 26th the newest chapter will be released. PS4, XBOX ONE and Nintendo Switch players will also get to enjoy this dark take on cartoon creation when it releases for consoles on Nov 20th.

Freakpocalypse: The Cyanide & Happiness Adventure Game

Last year the fine folks at Cyanide & Happiness raised over $500,000 to create their own video game and at this year’s comic con demos of the game were up and running. Freakpocalypse is a traditional point-and-click adventure game where your characters are high school students are dealing with a toxic waste induced apocalypse. The game is chock full of the delightfully-twisted humor that made the Cyanide & Happiness webcomic so popular. The release of the first chapter is due out in December 2018.

Which games are you beside yourself waiting for? Let us know in the comments below and be sure to tune into Game Engine on Twitch and Alpha for more video game goodness every Tuesday starting at 4PM PT.
