AFTER SCHOOL DICE CLUB Is the Board Game Anime You’ve Always Wanted

There’s an anime for just about anything you can think of: ice skating, eating good food, volleyball, even the ancient game of Go. The one we want that’s missing from the list? The drama, laughs, and camaraderie of tabletop gaming. That is, it was missing, until now! After School Dice Club is currently airing in Japan and available subtitled and dubbed on Hulu and Funimation. The adorable slice-of-life series features three girls who discover a mutual love of playing board games. It’s bright, sunny, full of anime mainstays like crushes and high school friendships, and even teaches viewers how to play some of tabletop’s most notable games.

Just look at this opening and try not to smile.

After School Dice Club, or Houkago Saikoro Club, is based on the manga series by the same name by Hirou Nakamichi. New friends Miki and Aya discover a board game store in Kyoto where their class representative Midori works, and the owner introduces the pair to the world of European tabletop gaming. “One of the most important things when playing a board game is imagination,” he tells the girls.

In the first episode, Midori teaches the girls the rules of Marrakech, a competitive game that involves a surprising amount of strategy; the second episode walks viewers through the bluffing game of Cockroach Poker. It’s obvious from the colorful and recognizable boxes in the friendly local game store that the series is dedicated to accurately teaching Miki, Midori, Aya, and the viewers about real life European-style games that you can pick up right now.

Just like real life, rolls of the dice or the slap of a card against the table lead to some big reactions from the players around the table. Even more importantly, After School Dice Club focuses on the relationships between those players, and how something as fun as a board game can make a true friendship grow.

Catch new episodes of After School Dice Club on Hulu and Funimation this fall, and you might learn something new about a board game or two yourself!
