A Quick Q&A With Liam O’Brien About the Second Critical Role Art Book

Critical Role is Geek & Sundry’s live Dungeons & Dragons show featuring Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer and his troupe of fellow voice actors. Catch them every Thursday night at 7:00 PM PT on the Geek & Sundry Twitch channel and on Alpha.

The second Critical Role art book, The Chronicles of Exandria Vol. 2: The Legend of Vox Machina, is now available on CritRole.com! This gorgeous tome, available in standard and deluxe editions, is 264 stunning pages of Critical Role art–206 pieces in total–created by the community and curated by Liam O’Brien and Taliesin Jaffe. Here they are to tell you all about it.

Liam also took a moment from his hectic schedule to chat with us about putting together the new art book, and the new adventures he’s taking with Sam Riegel in their show-slash-podcast All Work No Play.

Geek & Sundry: Did any of the pieces bring back memories you’d forgotten or hadn’t thought about from the end of Campaign 1?

Liam O’Brien: For sure. So many of these pieces in the book bring back ghosts of what it felt like in the moment. The art book is our collective daydream made concrete on the page.

How much time in a typical week do you spend going through the #CriticalRoleFanArt hashtag?

Oh, man. Uh… A lot of time. I try to drop in multiple times a day to keep abreast of art being shared. Otherwise, it builds up and becomes Mount Kilimanjaro. The community around the show keeps growing, and the amount of creativity grows with it. But it’s one of my favorite parts of this wild ride.

When you’re not looking at art, you’re having fun with Sam! Do you have a standout moment from All Work No Play?

Wielding fire, mein Liebling.

Do you enjoy going on the outings with Sam and friends more, or sipping drinks and chatting with him about it later?

I get so little one-on-one time with my buddy, that honestly, even though everything we’ve done has been a blast, the table time is definitely my favorite part.

The Chronicles of Exandria: The Legend of Vox Machina, expected to ship the week of November 19, is now available to order for $59.99/£59.99 (standard edition) or $124.99/£124.99 (deluxe edition). Visit CritRole.com for ordering and shipping information, along with a complete list of all 96 contributing artists.
