5 New Year’s Resolutions for Critters Inspired By Vox Machina

Critical Role is Geek & Sundry’s live Dungeons & Dragons show, featuring Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer and his troupe of fellow voice actors. Catch them every Thursday night at 7:00 PM PT on the Geek & Sundry Twitch channel and on Alpha.

Ah, the new year, the best time to set personal goals and embark on a fresh start. Critical Role may also be getting a fresh start and a new adventure this year, but that doesn’t mean that Vox Machina can’t be a part of your next 12 months.

Be inspired by some of your favorite Critical Role characters by choosing a goal or two (or all of them!) with these not-so-typical New Year’s resolutions.

Be a monstah. (Pike Trickfoot)

Whether you’re attacking a new fitness regimen or taking on challenges at work or school, remind yourself to Be Like Pike and give it everything you’ve got.

You might not be a champion in the Crucible along your bestie Grog, but you can make it a goal to be just as fierce by taking on any obstacle in your way with strength and grace.

VexVex

Treat yourself sometimes—within reason, of course. (Vex’ahlia)

Take time in 2018 (and beyond) to treat yourself. Whether it’s current events in the world getting to you or just a bad day where nothing went right, don’t feel guilty about taking some time to relax and recharge.

Take a bubble bath, buy yourself that deluxe Chronicles of Exandria art book you wanted someone to get you for the holidays, or even just snuggle in a comfy chair in a dark corner and listen to Vax’s playlist for a little while. Just be sure to take Vex’s frugal advice and don’t go overboard, or you might end up having another bad day down the road as a result.

Learn to be a better public speaker. (Keyleth)

Unleash your inner Voice of the Tempest by being inspired to practice public speaking. It’s a skill that comes in handy for just about anyone, even if you’re not leading your compatriots into battle against a recently resurrected god. You’ll be on your way to being an Inspiring Leader just like Kiki if you take on this goal this year.

Look into Toastmasters in your area, or even volunteer at a local convention to lead and moderate a panel—about Critical Role, perhaps?

Learn something new. (Grog Strongjaw)

In his time adventuring with Vox Machina, Grog faced ferocious foes like the towering Kevdak and fearsome Chroma Conclave. But perhaps the most daunting challenge Grog took on was learning how to read, starting with the help of his friend Pike and achieving his goal through study and persistence.

Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn? Attack it head-on in 2018! Learn a new language, start up a new sport, or attempt that hobby that’s always intrigued you.

Take your friends on an adventure as a Dungeon Master. (Matthew Mercer)

If you’re a veteran of Dungeons & Dragons but never had the chance to be a Dungeon Master — or it’s been a long time since you last sat behind the screen — why not make it a goal this year? Share your love of the game and give your friends the adventure of a lifetime (or more) by weaving your own story of action and intrigue.

Matthew Mercer and other experienced Dungeon Masters can even help you along the way, thanks to the invaluable Game Master Tips you’ll find on here Geek & Sundry and Alpha. You got this.
